To all whom it may concern: I

Be it known that we, LYMAN O. TULLIS and JOHN M. COX, citizens of the United States,

residing at Athens, in the county of Athens and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and usefullmprovementsin Sa d-Irons;.and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and.

exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the artto which it appertains to make and use the same, refer- -ence being had to the accompanying drawlugs, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in sad irons of that class in which is provided a substantially hollow body with a hinged lid and a catch or latch for holding the lid closed, and a removable heating block. 7

It has for its object among others to pro vide an improved and simplified device of this character which shall be more durable and complete and in which the lid may be entirely removed when desired without removal of any of the connecting parts.

It has for a furtherobject to provide an improved catch or latch for holding the lidin its closed position said latch being provided with operating means arranged to be manipulated by the fingers while'still grasping the handle of the iron, and means being provided for preventing burning of the hands whilemanipulating the said latch or catch. 7 We providea hollow body the rear end of which is tapered upon its upper wall to facilitate insertion of the heating block and to permit'the turning of the lid on its pivots, the under side of the lid at the rear end being likewise tapered. The lid is provided at its rear end with headed pins which engage notched pieces or plates on the body portion which allow the lid to be turned thereon as upon pivots and still allow of separation of the lid from the body portion when desired. We provide a hook at the front end of the body portion to be engaged by a sliding bolt or catch or latch which is arranged to be moved forward or back by a lever mounted on the handle and provided with a hand-' piece or knob by which it is actuated. The

"handle support is preferably of spring metal *so as to be vcompressed slightly to facilitate movement ofethe said lever.

The device asa whole is complete, composed of few parts, and those readily assembled, and 'in practice the iron'has proven most efficient for the purposes for which it is intended.

Other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear and the novel features thereof will be specificallydefined by the'appended claim.

The invention in the present instance resides in the peculiar combinations, and the construction, arrangement and adaptation of parts whereby the above ends are accom:

' The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of our improved sad iron with the lid shown as thrown up. Fig. 2 is a central vertical longitudinal section through the same.

Like letters of reference indicate like parts in both of the views.

Referring now to'the details of the drawings'by letter, Adesignates the body portion of the iron which is hollow and at its front end is provided or formed with an upwardlyextending hook at with an overhanging upper portion a. The rear upper face of the body portion is taperedor inclined from the rear toward-the cavity of the body portion and upon each side thereof near the rear end are the upwardly-extending hooks B which may be inclined slightly to the rear as seen in Fig.

1; they maybe integral with the body portion or formed separate therefrom and affixed thereto in any suitable manner.

O is the lid; it is formed at its'rear end with a notch 0 upon each side forming the extension 0 the under face of which is beveled or tapered as seen at c in Fig. 2. Projecting from each side of thisextension is a horizontal headed pin D or analogous device which is adapted to engage in the notches of the hooks B on the rear of the body portion and to rest therein and serve as pivots upon which the lid may be swung when desired. The lid may be easily removed from the iron when desired by simply inclining it slightly and then moving it forward and lifting it up as will be readily understood from Fig. 1. The taper of the under side of the rear end of the lid and that of the rear end of the body portion provides for the easy turning of the lid upon its pivots.

E is the handle; it is formed preferably as follows: F is the handle support; it is formed of a piece of spring material preferably in the shape of a U secured to the top of the lid by any suitable means and the ends of the said piece secured to and connected by the wooden portion G, the ends being insulated by means of rings of asbestus between the ends of the portion G and the endsof thehandle support F as seen at d to prevent burning of the wooden portion by the heat from the iron. This construction of handle permits of bodily movement of the handle by the elasticity of the spring piece, and this movement facilitates the manipulation of the lever which operates the latch. This latch H is seated in a longitudinal groove h in the front end of the lid, the latch is adapted to engage the hook on the front of the body portion, its forward end engaging under the overhanging portion thereof. The latch is provided upon its upper face with a transverse slot 72 in which is engaged one end of the lever I, the said lever consisting preferably of a single piece bent upon itself to form a long arm and a short arm, the free end of the long arm being that which is engaged in the said slot in the latch while the free end of the short arm is provided with a knob or equivalent device 4; as seen in Fig. 2. It operates to normally hold the latch outward in engagement with the notch in the hook a as seen in Fig. 2. The said long and short arms may however be formed of two pieces; both are secured to the front end of the handle by the same fastening device I.

J is the heating block removably fitted in the hollow of the hollow body portion, and provided with a cross bar or analogous means for the reception of the tool by which it is removed and inserted in position.

The operation will be readily understood from the foregoing description when taken in connection with the annexed drawings and a further detailed description thereof is not deemed necessary.
