ATTORNEY.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ISRAEL 0. SMITH, OF GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN.
FOLDING BED.
SPECIFICATIONforming part of Letters Patent No. 496,915, dated May 9, 1893.
Application filed October 20, 1892. erial No. 449,433. (No model.) A
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ISRAEL 0. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Beds; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improved folding bed, and its object is to provide the same with certain new and useful features, hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of a device embodying my invention as it appears when closed; Fig. 2, a vertical section of the same on theline 22 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3, the same showing the position of the parts when the bed is open.
Like letters refer to like parts in all of the figures.
A is a box shaped case or frame to contain the bedding, which has the usual sides and ends, and has two fixed bottom strips A A at each side, the balance being open except as closed by the movable front D (which may be provided with the mirror D) and the upper section 0. Said upper section is hinged to the front end of the case A, at L, and at each end is provided with legs 0', to engage the floor and support the foot of the case A, the opposite end of which case is provided with rockers B, upon which said case turns, from the vertical to horizontal position, and
i which support the head end of the same.
The movable front D ishinged at the top to the upper section 0, at K, and at the bottom to the rear edge of the board F, of substantially the same width as the section 0; said board is pivoted at its front angles to the rockers at M, and is arranged to turn on these pivots between said rockers. E is a box or receptacle attached to the front D and movable therewith between the rockers. A con tractile spring I is attached at its respective ends to the front D and the case A, and serves to balance the Weight of said front as it swings down to place.
H represents a series of Weights attached to the head of the case to balance the, same upon the rockers B, as a fulcrum.
The rear casters G are attached to the upper part of the end of the caseA, and the front casters G are attached to the board F.
N is a catch to hold the section 0 and legs 0 against the bottom of the case A, when the bed is closed; when thus held the section 0 and front D operate asa prop having aknuckle joint at K, and force the rear of the board F- down, bringingit toa horizontal position. The castersG then engage the floor and lift the rockers B free from the same, and sustain the case in a vertical position on all four casters. By releasing the catch N, and swinging the legs 0' outward, the rear of the board rises, thus lowering the rockers B in contact with the floor, and inclining the bed forward. It will now stand in this position with an opening at each side of the movable front D, for ventilation, or it can be easily turned upon the rockers B to a horizontal position; the various parts automatically assuming the position shown in Fig. 3; the legs 0 coming to a vertical position and being held and locked in place by the movable front D, and the board F, which now are in the same horizontal plane, and thus form a rigid prop between the pivots M and hinges K. When the bed is again turned to the vertical position upon the rockers, the springI serves to aid the various parts in automatically returning to the position shown in Fig. 2.
What I claim is 1. In a folding bed in combination with a case to contain the bed, having pivoted legs near one end, and rockers near the other end, a board pivoted to said rockers at one side, and a movable front pivoted to said board and to said legs atits respective ends, substantially as described.
2. In a folding bed a case to contain the bed, and arranged to be turned to avertical position, legs pivoted to the elevated end of the same, a board pivoted near the opposite end of the same, and a front closing the bottom of said case, and pivoted to said legs and board at its respective ends, substantially as described.
3. In a folding bed a case to contain the bed, rockers on said case, legs pivoted near one end of the same, aboard pivoted to said rockers at its forward side, casters on said board and onsaid case, and a front pivoted at its respective ends to said board and legs, suband legs at the respective ends, and a spring 10 attached to said front and case at its respective ends, substantially as described.
