Be it known that I, JAMES RYAN, of Atlanta, in the county of Fulton and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvem ents in Oard-Attachers and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of theinvention, such as will enable others skilled in t-he art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to figures of reference marked thereon,which form a part of this specification.

This invention has particular reference to a device for attaching route-cards to freightcars, the device produced, however, being useful equally as well for tacking up cards of any character, such as paper and tin advertisingcards. The invention consists of a device for spacing and holding the tacks, inserting same in the card, and Lacking the same to any desired point, the details of all of which will be hereinafter fully specified.

In the accompanying drawings,Figure 1 is a free view of the device, showing the parts in their normal positions. Fig. 2 is a view from the right-hand side of Fig. 1, showing the device in the position it would be caused to assume in attaching a card to a Vertical wall. Fig. 3 shows the same View of the device, eX- cepting the card-carrying leaf is closed into the position it would assume when the card has been forced upon the tacks. Fig. 4 is an enlarged section of aportion of the stationary leaf, showing one of the tack-holding clips. Fig. 5 is a view of same from the top in Fig. 4,furthershowing the elements therein shown.

In these figures like reference characters are employed in the designation of corresponding elements of construction in all the views.

The invention in the specific form illustrated in the drawings herewith is composed of a handle 1, by means of which the device is manipulated, to which handle the stationary leaf 2 is rigidly secured. This leaf is preferably shod on its free face with metal and also bound or shod therewith along its edges, as the device will ordinarily receive rough usage. Upon the face of this leaf 2 are nail or tack holders 3, which are made by notching a piece of metal and bending same outwardly around the said notch 4, so that when the said holder is riveted into its place there will be an opening behind it for the tack-head, the body projecting through the notch itherein and being held rigidly upright.

Suitably hinged to the lower edge of the part 2 is a movable leaf 5, which closes upon the leaf 2, having holes 6, into which any tacks held in the holders 3 may project.. A guide 7, consisting of pins, or, as shown, a strip is secured to the lower edge of the leaf 5. A button 8 is pivoted on the handle l and engages the leaf 5 when same is turned back upon the handle, as best seen on reference to Figs. 1 and 2.

The operation of this device is as follows: A tack is set in each of the vholders on the part 2. The card to be attached is placed face down and bottom edge up on the leaf 5 against the guide thereon, and said leaf is then turned against the leaf 2, whereupon the tacks pierce the card, which is left impaled thereon upon the turning back of the leaf 5, which after being returned is locked/by the use of the button as specified. The leaf 2 is then by means of the handle swung into forcible contact with the wall to which the card is to be affixed and the tacks entering said operation is performed.
