Description

m1111111 JUL 181871 UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcE.
EDWARD STWART, OF FORT MADISON, IOWA.
IMPROVEMENT lN CARD-HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 117,120, dated July 18, 1871.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD STEWART, of Fort Madison, in the county of Lee a-nd State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Adjustable (lard-Holders 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing through letters of of reference marked thereon forming part ot' this specication, in which- Figure 1 represents a face view of a card-holder constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the same taken on the line v :v of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is alongitudinal section taken on the line y y of Fig. 1.
The same letters indicate like parts in all the iigures.
The object of this invention is to afford a simple and adjustable mea-ns for holding' advertisingcards or bills of different sizes upon cars, walls of rooms, or elsewhere, instead of nailing them to the same, as is now generally the practice, and whereby they may be readily detached and others substituted in their places, when desired, and it provides for the insertion and retention of bills, cards, or the like, of diiierent sizes.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, A represents the main board, constructed of iron, brass, wood, or other suitable material, against which the card or bill to be posted rests. On
the top of this mainboard is a cap or cover, D,
preferably of sheet metal, to shield the bill in wet weather when it is exposed out of doors. Immediately below this cap D is a clamp, B, ex-
tending crosswise of the main board A, to which it is. hinged at its upper inner edge at o, and pressed to the same along its lower edge by a spring, d. In each side of this main boa-rd A are grooves a to carry the guides b b, which are connected by a bar or strip, E, and to which the lower clamp C is hinged and pressed down on the board A by a spring, d', so that the lower clamp (l and bar E, with the guides b b, can slide up and down the main board A to suit any length of bill desired to be posted. On the face of this main boa-rd A is a number of small grooves, e, eXtendings lengthwise of the same, into which the projecting points ff in the edges of the upper and lower clamps are arranged to enter, so as to pierce the edges of the bill or card, and thereby more securely hold it in place. The clamps B (l are each furnished on their upper sides with a lip or strip of metal, g g, whereby to lift them and facilitate the removal of bills or cards for the substitution of others when necessary. IV hen the bill is to be inserted the clamp B is operated by passing the thumb or linger under the lip g and lifting the same, and when the top edge of the bill or card is pushed underneath as far as desired the clamp is allowedto spring back to its place, so that the points j' penetrate and retain it in place. The bar E, carrying the clamp C is then slid up the main board suiiieiently high to cover the lower edge, when, by raising the clamp (l, the points f will secure the lower edge in like manner. By this arrangement any sized bill may be posted on the same board or holder. Instead ofthe pointsj'f and grooves e a serrated edge on the clamp, or other medium. to insure a rm hold on the bill or card, may be substituted.
IVhat is here claimed, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with the board A, of the hinged stationary clamp B, and the adjustable clamp (l, substantially as shown and described, for the purpose set forth.
EDWARD STEWART.
