NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.

FERRU LE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 481,753, dated August 30, 1892.
Application filed January 23,1892. Serial No. 419,022. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. GASKILL, a citizen of the United States, residing in the cityand county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Ferrules, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to improvements in ferrules; and it consists of a novel manner of securing the point to the ferrule, the same involving an outwardly-turned knurl or head which controls a retaining-piece at or on the head of the point within the ferrule.
Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a ferrule embodying myinvention. Fig. 2 represents a longitudinal section thereof. Fig. 3 represents a longitudinal section of a modification. Figs. 4 and 5 represent perspectiv views of detached portions.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a conical ferrule, and B the point thereof.
Within the ferrule and resting against the head of the pointisa retaining-piece O, which in Fig. 4 consists of a cup-up or disk and in Fig. 5 of a split ring or other annular form, said piece being embraced by a peripheral bead or knurl D on the ferrule, the same projecting outwardly from the surface of said ferrule, it being seen that the cup-up, disk, or ring is controlled by said bead or knurl and the head of the point abuts against the same, said point being thus firmly connected with the ferrule and confined within the same, so that it is prevented from being driven thereinto or shifted when in use.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A ferrule provided with a peripheral bead or knurl,in combination with a pointinserted in the ferrule below said bead or knurl and a retaining-piece located in and embraced by the said head, substantially as described.
WILLIAM H. GASKILL.
