DAVID SAMUEL, OF NEV YORK, N. Y.
CAP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 473,784, dated April 1892- Application filed January 23, 1892. Serial No. 419,028. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, DAVID SAMUEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Caps; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. My invention has relation to improvements 111 that class of caps having depending stormcollars which are adapted to be folded up around the cap when not in use; and it consists 1n the peculiar construction, certain novel combinations, and the adaptation of parts hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claim appended.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved cap with the storm-collar folded up around the same. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the same with the storm-collar depending from the cap in its operative position. Fig. 3 is an inverted plan view illustrating the interior of the cap when the storm-collar is folded up out of its operative position. Fig. 4 is an enlarged plan view of the blank from which the storm-collar is formed, and Fig. 5 is a side view of the cap with the storm-collar depending therefrom in its operative position.
In the said drawings similar letters desighate corresponding parts throughout the several views, referring to which- A indicates the crown of my improved cap, and B indicates the visor thereof, both of which may be of the ordinary or any approved form and may be constructed from any material suitable to the purposes of my invention.
0 indicates myimproved storm-collar,which is preferably formed from the same material as the crown A, to which it is connected, as will be presently disclosed. This collar 0, the blank of which is shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings, comprises the body D, the middle of which rests at the back of the cap when the collar is connected thereto, and the reduced ends E, which are connected together at the front of the cap by stitching or in any other suitable manner, as better illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawings. The lower edge of the collar-bodyD is inclined upwardly from its middle to the points where it merges into the downwardly and forwardly inclined lower edges of the ends E, while the upper edge of the said body, which is preferably straight and is connected to the lower edge of the cap-crown by sewing or otherwise, merges at its ends into the inwardly-curved upper edges of the said ends By the provision of the reduced ends E, formed as described, it will be readily perceived that when the collar is down in its operative position a face-opening of sufficient size will be afiorded and the forward portion of the collar formed by the reduced ends E will rest over the throat of the-wearer and cover and protect the same. \Vhen the collar is to be folded up around the cap, the body portion D thereof is creased at about its longitudinal center and is folded up about the cap-crown, so that its edge will rest flush with the lower edge of the said crown. The forward portion of the collar formed by the ends E is then hooked over the visor B, as illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawings, when by reason of the peculiar form of the said forward portion its main portion will rest upon and conform to the inside of the forward portion of the cap and the inside of the visor.
From the foregoing description it will be readily'perceived that when the collar is folded up around the cap said cap will correspond in size to and will present the appearance of a cap without a collar.
Although I have specifically described the construction and relative arrangement of the several elements of my improved cap, yet I do not desire to be confined to the same, as such changes or modifications may be made as fairly fall within the scope of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is y In a cap, substantially as described, the combination, with the crown and the visor extending forwardly therefrom, of the storm-collar comprising the body D, connected at its upper edge to the edge of the crown and having its lower edge inclined upwardly from its In testimony whereof I affix my signature in middle to the points Where it merges into the presence of two witnesses.
reduced ends E, and the said ends E, connected together and having their lower edges inclined forwardly and downwardly and their upper edges on rved inwardly, substantially as specified.
DAVID SAMUEL. \Vifinesses:
J OHN M. MONULTY, JACOB lVIENDELSOHN.
