Description

(No Model.)
L. McOLEARY &"J. STONE. ADJUSTABLE WHEEL GOLTBR FOR PLOWS.
No. 464,439. Patented Dec. 1; 1891.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEE MOCLEARY AND JOSEPH STONE, OE SOHALLER, IOWA.
ADJUSTABLE WHEEL-COLTER FO R PLOWS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 464,439, dated December 1, 1891.
I Application filed July 13 1891. Serial No 399,279. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that we, LEE MOOLEARY and JOSEPH STONE, citizens of the United States of America, residing at Schaller, in the county of Sac and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Adjustable Wheel-Oolter for Plows, of which the following is a specification.
Our object is to provide a strong, durable, and cheap device adapted to be mounted on a plow of common form as required, to quickly, conveniently, and firmly adjust the colter, either vertically, longitudinally, or transversely relative to the beam and nose of a plow, to operate effectively in different kinds of soil and under varying conditions of the land that is to be plowed.
Our invention consists in the construction and combination of a metal frame mounted on a plow and connected with a wheel-colter and having a lever with a spring-actuated latch attached thereto, which latch is adapted to engage a segmental rack, said lever to be mounted-in the frame in proximity to the handles and adapted to adjust the wheelcolter to any desired position relative to the plow-beam and nose of a plow.
Our invention consists, further, in certain other features of construction hereinafter set forth, pointed out in the claim, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a side view of a common plow having our invention applied thereto as required for practical use. Fig. 2 is a'transverse section through the line a: 00 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the frame in which the wheel-colter is journaled and the bar which supports it.
The letter A designates a plow, which may vary in form. Y
13 represents a metal frame adj ustably and detachably fastened to the plow-beam.
O is-a bar pivotally and adjustably connected with said frame to extend downward and forward from the frame, and its lower end terminates in a loop having a flat base 0 extending at right angles to the bar. A
slot 0 adapted to admit the frame of the .wheel-colter as required to adjustably connect it with the bar, extends through the flat base transversely to the beam of the plow. A wheel-colter D, of common form, is adjustably connected with the bar 0 by means of a screw-threaded projection extending through slot 0 and clamped thereto by means of a nut D A rod F has a pivotal connection with the bar 0 and the lever H, hereinafter described, as required to adjust the colter when the said lever is operated.
H represents a lever of the first order, fulcnumed to a frame J in such a manner as to be readily accessible to a person at the rear or side of a-plow, which frame J is mounted between the handles and the beam of a plow, and has a segmental rack J attached to its central portion. The lever H is provided with a spring-actuated latch H which engages the segmental rack J as required to hold the parts firmly in position.
In the practical operation of our device it will readily be seen by one skilled in the art to which it pertains that the wheel-colter may be quickly adjusted vertically, as required to regulate the depth of the cut in the gitudinally by means of the screw-bolt passing through the perforations in the upper portion of the bar 0, or regulated transversely by adjusting the frame of the wheelcolter in the slot 0 of the bar 0, as required to regulate the width of the furrow.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
An improved adjustable wheel-colter for plows, comprising a frame adapted to be adjustably connected with the beam of a plow composed of two metal plates adapted to encircle the beam with a perforated extension at their tops and connected above and below the beam by means of screw-bolts, a bar pivotally and adj ustably connected with the said perforated extension having means at its lower end for connecting the frame of soil by operating the lever or adjusting Ionawheel-colter therewith in such a manner end of the aforesaid bar, as and for the puras to be adjustable laterally relative to the poses stated. 7 beam of the plow, a lever pivoted to a sup- 1 LEE MOGLEARY. poxt mounted in uxtaposition to the han- JOSEPH STONE 5 dles of the plow and provided withaspringactuated latch adapted to engage a seg-l Witnesses.
mental rack, and a connecting-rod pivoted to i J. S. HUDSON,
the lower end of the lever and to the lower F. C. HUDSON.
