CHARLES L. COOK, OF NEXV YORK, N. Y.
DRAWER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 462,302, dated November 3, 1891.
Application filed April 28, 1891. $erial No. 390,345- (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES L. 000K, a citizen of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drawers; and I do hereby declare the following to bea full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in drawers, and more particularly to such as are adapted for containing music, books, and papers of any description, the object of the invention being to produce a drawer for containing music, papers, or books which shall be simple in construction, cheap to manufacture, easy to manipulate, and effectual in the performance of its functions.
A further object is to construct a drawer for the purpose stated in such manner that its contents shall be made easily accessible and so that any paper in the drawer may be extracted without liability of dis'arrangement of other papers contained therein.
With these objects in view the invention consists in the combination, with a drawer, of a sliding slab located therein,
The invention also consists in the combination, with a drawer having a hinged front, of a sliding slab located in said drawer; and the invention also consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, as hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is -a View of my improved drawer, showing the slab in place and the front of the drawer open. Fig- 2 is a similar view showing the slab withdrawn. Fig. 3 is a similar view with the slab in place and the front of the drawer closed.
A represents the drawer, having an open front end provided with a hinged front B. Extending across the front end of the drawer is a strip O, having a beveled under face, the object of thus beveling the strip O being to prevent papers when being withdrawn from being injured or torn by the edges of said strip. At the center of the strip 0 a springcateh O is attached and adapted to passinto a perforation in the hinged front B and thus lock the front in place.
The sides of the drawer are provided in proximity to their lower edges with grooves a for the reception of a slab D of wood or othersuitablematerial, saidslab beingadapted to slide in the groove a and be normally in closed in the drawer. A strap or ribbon D is secured to the front edge of the slab whereby to operate it.
\Vith the device thus constructed, the music, papers, or books will be placed on the slab, the slab pushed into the drawer, and the front of the latter closed. Now when it is desired to extract one of the papers contained in the drawer it is simply necessary to swing down the hinged front B and slide the slab out, whereupon the desired paperor other sheet may be readily removed without disarranging other papers.
The device is very simple in construction, is cheap to manufacture, is useful for musicdealers, Stationers, and business men generally, and is effectual in the performance of its functions.
Should the drawer at any time become overcrowded with papers, &c., it is simply necessary to pull out the drawer, drop the front, as above described, and press down the papers from above, at the same time pulling out the slab. This allows the free passage of the papers under the beveled cross-bar.
Having fully described myinvention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with a drawer having an open front end, of a beveled strip across said front end, a hinged front, and a slab adapted to slide in said drawer, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with a drawer having an open front, of a strip across said front end, a hinged front for said drawer, a catch on said strip adapted to engage the hinged front, a sliding slab in said drawer, and a pull-strap or ribbon secured to said slab, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CHAS. L. COOK.
