FENCE-POST SUPPORT.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent 'NO. 461,709, dated October 20, 1891.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE WASHINGTON PORTER, of Ganibier, in the county of Knox and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fence-Post Supports; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it,

thereto.

Figure 1 is a side elevation of a support which embodies my invention, being shown in connection with a panel of afence. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same.

The support hereinafter described is designed to be usedin connection with the posts of a fence of that character in which the intermediate posts rest upon the ground and need to be supported while the braces and wires or boards are being secured thereto.

A indicates an intermediate post, to which the braces B C and the Wires D are secured in the usual manner and which rests directly upon the ground.

It will be understood that. in practice the stationary posts (not shown) are first set in the ground and the line-wires are then stretched and secured in the usual manner. The intermediate posts A A are then properly placed near the stretched wires and are held in position by the supporting device while the stretched wires are being secured. The post Secured around these upper ends is the loop L, through which is passed the arm G. This arm is provided at its forward end with the strap H and buckle I, by which means the post is secured thereto. In operation the braces J, being sharpened at their lower ends,

are forced into the groun a short distance from the post desired to be held, either in a line with the fence or to one side thereof. The post is then secured to the arm G by the strap H. The arm fits tightly within the loop L, but may be adjusted through it to suit the distance between the braces J and the desired position of the post. By means of the arm G and braces J the post is held in an upright position until the wires are secured thereto.

The device may be used to advantage in setting trees and permanent fence-posts, holding them in the desired position while earth is being filled in around the roots and bases.

Having thus described my invention, I claim- I In a fence-post support,the diverging braces sharpened at their lower ends and connected at their upper ends, aloop secured around the upper ends of the braces, an arm fitting tightly Within the said loop and provided at one end with afastening device by means of which the post is secured thereto, the parts combined for the purpose substantially as shown and described.
