SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent NO. 472,578, dated April 12, 1892.

To all whom it may concern: V

Be it known that I, WINFIELD S. KLINE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bolivar, in the county of Tuscarawas and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fences; and I do hereby declare that the following isa full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters marked thereon, in which Figure 1 is a view of a part or portion of a picket fence constructed in accordance with my improved plan. Fig. 2 is a detached View of one of the brace-supports. Fig. 3 is a view of one of the brace-supports, showing a brace properly attached thereto. Fig. 4 is a View showing two braces properly attached to a perpendicularcenter-piece which is calculated and designed to be used in the construction of wire fences. Fig. 5 is a view showing a modified form of construction from that illustrated in Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is an edge view of the braces. Fig. 7 is a view showing a Wire fence to illustrate its use as applied to my invention.

The present invention has relation to fences; and it consists in the different parts and combination of parts hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.

Inthe accompanying drawings,A represents the fence-supports, which are substantially of the form shown in the drawings and are preferably formed of burnt clay. In use the supports are set a sufficient distance into the ground to hold them in proper position.

For the purpose of better holding the supports in the position placed said supports are formed tapering and decrease in size from their bottom or lower ends to their top or upper ends.

For the purpose of assisting in holding the braces B upon the supports A the V- shaped shoulders a are provided, which V- shaped shoulders may be located upon the side of the support A, as illustrated in the drawings.

- The V-shaped shoulders a are for the purpose of receiving the corresponding V-shaped notches I), located in the bottom or lower ends of the braces B.

For the purpose of holding the bottom or lower ends of the braces B in proper position upon the supports A the wires O are provided, which wires are wrapped around. the upper ends of the supports A and the braces B, substantially as illustrated in the drawings. The wires 0 are securely twisted or otherwise clamped or attached to the supports A and the-braces B.

For the purpose of preventing the wires C from becoming detached from the supports A the notches or grooves c are provided, which notches or grooves are for the purpose of receiving the wires O.

In the construction of picket fences such as shown in Fig. 1 the braces B are crossed, as illustrated at D, and the top or upper portions of said braces B extend a short distance above the point D, thereby forming a V-shaped opening above the point D, which V-shaped opening is for the purpose of receiving and holding the top or upper wires d, which wires d hold the pickets d in the ordinary manner.

For the purpose of preventing the wires d from becoming detached from the braces B the Wires E are provided, which wires embrace the top or upper portions of the bracesB and extend across the V-shapcd opening located above point D above or on top of the wires (1, thereby securely holding the wires d, together with the pickets d, in proper position and at the same time suspending the fence proper from its top or upper portion.

For the purpose of preventing the fence proper .from swinging at its bottom or lower portion the cross-wires F are provided, which cross-wires are attached to the bottom or lower portions of the braces B above the supports A, and the center portions of said cross-wires F are attached to the lower fence-wires d substantially as illustrated in Fig. 1.

It will be seen that by my peculiar arrangement no supports or posts are required except the braces B, and that the fence is suspended from its top or upper portion and rests entirely upon the braces B, thereby placing the entire weight of the fence upon the supports A, which supports are located at the sides of the fence, which form a strong brace for the fence proper.

In the drawings but two sets of line-wires are shown; but it will be understood that any number of line-wiressuch as d and (I -may be employed in the construction of the fence.

In the construction of wire fences I prefer to provide the center stay G, nail or other wise attach the top or upper ends of the braces 13 at the upper portion of the said stay G, and attach the wires of the fence proper thereto, and for the purpose of staying the bottom or lower portion of the fence proper I provide the cross -wire H, which may be wrapped around the center stay G and also attached to the bottom or lower portions of the braces B in substantially the same manner as the crosswires are attached to the braces in the construction of picket fences.

In Fig. 5 a modified form is shown for bracing the bottom or lower portion of the fence, which consists of the cross-board I, provided with the notch .I, which is for the purpose of receiviugand holdingthe wire; and, if desired,

the wire received in the notch J may be securely attached by means of a staple, thereby preventing the wire from becoming detached.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

In a wire or picket fence, the combination of the upper line-wires d, secured in the upper angle of the cross-braces B, said braces provided with V-shaped notches at their lower ends and resting on supports in corresponding shoulders and secured thereto by wires, with the cross-Wires F attached to the lower fence-wires and braces B, thereby staying the lower portion of the fence, substantially and for the purpose specified.
