DOCUMENT BOX.
No. 460,768. Patented Oct. 6, 1891.
WITNESSES} UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDVARD L. ANDRElVS, OF BOSTON, AND GEORGE A. JENNESS, OF MALDEN, MASSACHUSETTS.
DOCUMENT-BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters ,Patent No. 460,768, dated October 6, 1891. Application filed January 22, 1891. Serial No- 378,629. (No model.)
T all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, EDWARD L. ANDREWS, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, and GEORGE A. JENNEss,
of Malden, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts aforesaid, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in Document-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object to provide a telescopic document-box which shall be capable of being elongated by the drawing out of one end thereof and it consists in a document-box having one end piece, a bottom [5 piece, and two side pieces, all rigidly attached to each other, the two side pieces having at the ends opposite to those which are rigidly affixed to said end piece pockets which receive two wings or flanges, which are rigidly 2o aiiixed to another end piece, and by means of which said last-named end piece may be drawn out to enlarge the box without break ing the continuity of the walls thereof, as I will now proceed to describe and claim.
Of the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a document-box embodying myinvention, showing the end piece in its normal position. Fig. 2 represents a 0 similar view showing the box with the end piece drawn out. Fig. 3 represents a section on line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig.4 representsaview of a corner of the box, a portion of the outer covering of the pocket being broken away in order to show the locking device.
The same letters of reference indicate the same parts in all the figures.
In the drawings, a (I, represent the side pieces, .1) the bottom piece, and c the back end piece, of a document-box. Said pieces are rigidly affixed to each other in any suitable way to form a box, and the same may be of any suitable shape and material. At the front ends of said side pieces a are formed two pockets (Z (Z, which are adapted to receive two wings or flanges c e. Said wings c e are rigidly affixed to the front end piece f. The front end piece f has its 'lower edge hinged at g to the front edge of the bottom piece I). At its upper edge said front piece f has a socket 72., adapted to receive the locking-rod i. Near the middle of said socket is an opening from which the locking-rod projeets in the form of ahandlej. At the outer ends of the socket 7b the looking-rod is bent at right angles and projects toward the rear of the box. The ends of said locking-rod 1? are again bent at right angles, so as to form a hook at the extreme end projecting upwardly,
as shown at 71;. The locking-rod is adapted to move freely in the socket h. The handle j is slightly heavier than the two bent end portions, so that the ends 7.: of the locking-rod will be pressed upwardly by the leverage exerted by the weight of the handle j.
\Vhen the movable front piece f is drawn outwardly, it is prevented from being drawn out too far by the engagement of the flanges c of the wings c with the flange (Z' of the outside casing of the pockets (2, as is shown most clearly in Fig. 3. \Vhen the movable end piecef is drawn out, the wings e e constitute continuations of the side pieces a a of the box. hen the movable front piece f is to be pushed back to its normal position, the handle j of the locking-rod is raised sufficiently to cause the hooked ends 70 70 thereof to enter the tops of the pockets (Z. hen the, movable front piece f is in its normal position, the handlej is released and byits weight causes the hooked arms 76 to engage the shoulders m on the interior of the pockets (I, as shown in Fig. 4, thereby locking the movable end piece f inits normal position. hen the end piecefis to be drawn out to elongate the box, the handle 7' is raised, thereby depressing the hooked arms 7; of the locking-rod and releasing them from the shoulders 'm and allowing the movable end piecef to be freely drawn forward.
It will be seen that by the above device a box full of papers can be elongated to such an extent as to allow of free and easy examination of its contents, and that without breaking the continuity of its walls.
We do not limit ourselves to the precise form and arrangementshown. \Ve may make the box with a movable front piece and wings which shall be entirely telescopic, the front piece not being hinged to the bottom at all, I00 but being provided with telescopic side pieces and bottom piece.
It will be seen that various changes may be made in the form of our device and of various details thereof without departing from the nature and spirit of our invention.
' We claim- 1. In a document-box, the combination of the side pieces having the flange-receiving pockets on their outer sides, the movable end piece hinged at its lower edge to the body of the box and provided with wings or flanges projecting into and movable in said pockets, the inside of the box being smooth and practica-lly unbroken when the same is closed, and means for detachably securing or locking the end piece to the body of the box in its normal position, said flanges constituting continuations of the sides of the box when the movable end piece is displaced from its normal position, as set forth.
2. In a document-box, the combination, with the body portion comprising the bottom piece, an end piece, and two side pieces, all rigidly connected, said side pieces having pockets at d on their outer sides, of the movable end piece hinged at its lower edgeto the bottomb of the box and provided with the wings or flanges e e, entering the pockets (1 d, and the locking-rod mounted to turn in a socket on the swinging end of the movable end piece and provided with hooked arms formed to engage shoulders on the side pieces and inside of the pockets d d, as set forth.
3. The box-body consisting of the bottom,
hinged end-piece, as set forth.
In testimony whereof we have signed our names to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, this 10th day of June, A. D. 1890.
EDWARD L. ANDREWS. GEORGE A. J ENNESS.
