PENGIL SHARPENER.
No. 460,658. Patented Oot.6, 1891.
Na 7 ///////////////////////////////////////////////////W UNI ED STATES ATENT OFFICE.
BARTON PICKERING, OF DAYTON, OHIO.
PENClL-SHARPENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. &60,658, dated October 6, 1891.
Application filed February 13, 1891. Serial No. 38l,284. (No model.)
TO all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BARTON PIOKERING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dayton,in the couuty of Montgomeyand State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pencil-Sharpeners; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which Will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in pencil-sharpeners, the features of which will be fully hereinafter described and claimed.
The teeth of a file are preferably cut diagonally, and in using the same to abrade a surface, as an object is drawn over said file, said object is inclined to take the direction of the grooves, where the object should move parallel with the sides of the file to do the most effec ive work.
The object of my invention is to guide pencils in such manner that the movement over the surface of the file will be longitudinal. I accomplish this object by this nechanisms illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side View of the device with the file partiaily drawn out of the handle or case. Fig. 2 is a top view of a file in which the teeth are cut in a channel. Fig. 3 is a transverse section of thesame.
Like letters and numerals designate like parts in the several views. p
A is a metallic case or handle of proper size to receive the file or blade B, and is provided with a longitudinal slot, through which the teeth of said file are exposed. The slot may eXtend throughout the full length of the case, or the ends be closed, a's illustrated, and in the right end may be secured the rubber eraser G. The spring-catch t may be attached to the side of the case to engage notches in the side of the file to hold the same in proper position in the case for the several uses. The slot in the side of the case serves as a guide to lead or slate pencils, as they are drawn along the surface of the file for the purpose of sharpening them.
B is a plate of steel, the right end of which is toothed as a file, and the left end comprises the cutting-edge 3, the erasing-edge 2, and the tearing-edge 1. The cutting is used as a knife, the end edge as an eraser for writing, and the rear blunt edge as a paperknife. The knob 5 may be usedto move the blade within the case.
At Figs. 2 and 3 is shown the plate C, of channeled steel. The lower surface is cut as a file 8, the side rims 7 serving as a guide to pencils, the same as the slotin the case. This may be used in the form shown, or may be provided with the several severing-edges, as those of blade B. In use a lead or slate pencil is drawn over the toothed surface until the requisite sharpening is etfected, and with ,the lead-pencil the sharpening is expedited by using the blade to cut away the wood, the finishing being done on the file part.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isi 1. In a pencil-sharpener, the flat file-blade B, provided with oblique teeth, in combination with the longitudinally-slotted case A, said case serving as a guide as a pencil is drawn along said hlade, substantally as described.
2. As a new article of manufacture, the blade B, provided with file-teeth on the side at one end, and on the opposite end the cutting-edge 3, the curved erasingedge 2, and the severing-edge 1, substantially as shown and described.
3. As a new article of manufaoture, the penoil-sharpener C, comprising a solid channeled bar provided with file-teeth on the bottom of the channel, the margins thereof serving as guides, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affiX my signature in presence oftwo witnesses.
BARTON PICKERING.
