SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 402,914, dated May 7, 1889.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JONAS R. FOSTER, of Stoneham, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Pencil-Sharpeners, of which the following description, in connection with the blade has at its outer end a curved or hooked portion, one edge of which is sharpened to be used to point the lead after the wood has been clipped or shaved off by the main portion of the blade.

Figure 1 shows an under side view of a pencil-sharpener embodying this invent-ion, and Fig. 2 a cross-section taken on the line at 00.

The block a has a recess, 1), formed in its under side. A blade, 0, is secured to the block a above the recess 17, the cutting-edge of said blade lying adjacent to the Wall Z) of the recess, and in a plane just beneath the under surface of the block a. The blade 0 is preferably attached to the block a adj ustably and to this end I provide the blade with transverse slots 0, through which are passed setscrews 0 which enter holes tapped in the block a.

lVhen it is desired to point the pencil or produce a fine tapering point, the hooked blade or end 0 is used like an ordinary blade. By the tool herein described the wood of the pencil may be removed as much or little as desired and the point of the pencil exposed for any desired length, and also pointed to a nioety.

I may, if desired, omit the hooked end 0 It will be seen that the blade may be readily removed and sharpened when desired and thereafter be replaced.

I claim 1. A pencil sharpener composed of the block provided with a handle and with a recess in its under side, and a blade attached to the block above the recess and with its outting-edge adjacent and parallel to one Wall of the recess and beyond the under surface of the block, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

2. A pencil-sharpener composed of the recessed block a, the blade 0, having the hooked end 0 and the handle (I, all substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

3. A pencil sharpener composed of the block a, blade 0, adjustably attached thereto, and the handle d, secured to one end of the said block, all substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
