SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 449,172, dated March 31, 1891.

Be it known that I, LAVERN REYNOLDS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ironing-Board Attachments; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention ,such aswill enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.

The primary object of my invention is to afford the means for retaining the original. shape of the neck-yoke and neck of a shirt or similar article of personal wear during the operation of ironing upon the ironing-board, and thereby prevent the spreading of the yoke and neck of the garment during such process; and it consists in thenovelconstruc tion and combination of parts, which will first be fully described, and specifically pointed out in the claims.

In the drawings, Figure l is a view in perspective of my improved yoke-securing lever removed from the ironing-board. Fig. 2 is a plan view showing an end portion of theironneck-yoke band and the I securing-lever, also showing the neck-yoke portion of a shirtbosom upon the ironing-board and the yokeband secured by the jointed lever. Fig. 3 is an end view of the ironing-board as seen in Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a broken detail in perspective of the shoe and the flanged end portion of the lever, showing the hinge by means of which the shoe and-lever are connected.

In my invention,A represents an ironingboard, which is of the ordinary width of the bosom of the garment to be ironed and of a suitable thickness. In the upper-surface and extending from one end of said board the desired distance in the direction of the other end is made a depression a, the sides a a of which depression at the end of said board A are each equally distant from the respective longitudinal edges of said board, to which it is adjacent and at a suitable distance apart corresponding to the width of the neck-openin g between the separate portions of the neckyoke of the shirt or garment to be ironed. posite centers at said end the sides a a of said depression a are made to describe in the direction of the otherend of said board meeting curves intersecting in one direction, and the lines of said curves are made equal to the lengths'of the neck-yoke band on the separate portions of the neck-yoke of the shirt or garment. The sides a a of the depression a are slightly inclined in an outward direction, for the purpose hereinafter described.

In the depression a is placed the lever B, which consists of two longitudinal bars I) I), both of which are narrow in width and comparatively short in length. Upon the side and near the end of one of the bars I) is cast a ring h a flanged portion 11 of which ring extends a short distance beyond the end of said bar I) in line with the side portion of the bar to which the said ring is attached, forming a stop or shoulder.

To the end portion of the bar I) provided with the ring b is hinged one end of the other bar I), the pivot b of which hinge extends in a verticaldirection through the separate jointed portion of said bars and in connection with the shoulder b forming a stophinge. The other ends of the respective bars I) Z) extend in the transverse direction of the ironing-boardAin the direction of and nearly to the respective sides ct'ct of the depression Ct in said board and are increased by the flanges 19 b on either side a short distance in width, and to said ends of each bar I) I) is hinged the rocking blocks or shoes b b. Each one of the blocks or shoes I) is of the corresponding thickness of the bars I) I) and of an increased length to the said end portion of the bars havingthe flanges b andis curved upon its outer surface. Upon the outer curved surface of each shoe b, opposite the sides a a of the depression a in the board A, is attached in a suitable manner a yielding pad 0, whichis composed of felt, wool, or any other suitable material.

In the operation of my invention letD represent the shirt-bosoin to be ironed, (Z (Z the neckokes, and d the neck-yoke band. The shirt-bosom is placed in position so as to bring the neckband in line with the edges a a of the depression C6 in the board A, and said band is pressed downward within the depression a of the ironing-board and closeagainst the sides CL'CL'Of the said depression, the inclination of which side is sufficient to permit the close engagement of the neekband therewith without stretching. The lever B, which is normallyin the position seen in dotted lines, Fig. 2, is seized by the hand at the point Z7 and the bars forced intoaposition in line with each other, as seen in full lines, Fig. 2, the shoulder b limiting the extended position of the lever, after which the garment is drawn into conformity with the other portion of the ironing-board in readiness to be ironed. In this movement the shoes 12 turn upon the pivots orbolts a and the flanges 11 upon the side of the bars are caused to bear and press upon the shoes Z7, and the pad 0, which prevents the band from being drawn over the otherwise smooth surface of the shoes, is wedged against the said band d, and the surface of the bosom is kept smooth and prevented from creasing. The position of the lever B can be readily changed and screws used in place of the bolts, the ordinary position, however, being preferred, in which the lever will exert an equal pressure upon the neekband at each side of the neckband openin The bars I) b, with the rocking shoes, may be used in other combinations than in the exact combination described.

Having fully described my invention, what I now claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A lever composed of separate longitudinal parts or bars having the adjacent ends of the separate bars hinged together and the other ends provided with rocking shoes hinged thereto, substantially as and for the purpose described.

2. A lever composed of separate longitudinal parts or bars having a stop-hinge connected with and between the adjacent end portions of the separate bars and the other or outer end portions of each of said bars provided with a rocking shoe hinged thereto, and a pad upon the outer surface of said shoe, substantially as described.

3. A lever composed of separate longitudinal parts or bars having the adj acent ends of the separate bars hinged together, and laterally-extended flanges upon the other ends of said bars, rocking shoes hinged to said flanged end portions of said bars, and athilnble-plate and thimble connected with said shoes, substantially as and for the purpose described.

4:. In an ironing-board having a depression in its upper surface, and sides to said depression adapted to receive the neckband of a garment, the combination of a hinge-jointed lever extending from one to the other side of such depression having hinged rocking shoes to clamp the neckband, substantially in the manner described.

In an ironing-board having a depression in its upper surface and sides to said depression, the combination of a jointed lever com posed of separate longitudinal parts or bars having a stop-hinge connected with and between the adjacentends of the separate bars and the other ends of said bars provided with rocking shoes, substantially as and for the purpose described.

6. In an ironing-board having a depression in its upper surface and sides to said depression adapted to receive the neckband of a garment, the combination of a jointed lever composed of separate longitudinal parts or bars having a stop-hinge connected with and between the adjacent ends of the separate bars and flanges upon the sides of the other extended ends of said bars, and rocking blocks or shoes hinged to said extended ends of said bars provided with yielding pads, sub stantially as and for the purpose described.

7. In an ironing-board having a depression in its upper surface and sides to said depression adapted to receive the neckband of a garment, the combination of a jointed lever composed of separate longitudinal parts or bars having a stop-hinge connected with and between the adjacent ends of the separate bars and flanges upon the sides of the other extended ends of said bars, rocking shoes hinged to said extended flanged ends of said bars having a thimble-plate and thiinble pivotally connected with said ironing-board, and a pad upon the outer surface of said seg ments and a ring connected with one of said bars near said stop-hinge, substantially as and for the purpose described.
