Be it known that I, CLUTAU S. Hrofcnr, a citizen of the United States, l residing at Fayetteville, in thecounty of Vashington and State of Arkansas, have invented; certain new and useful lmprovements inGloth Clamping and Stretching Means for Ironing-Boards, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings. i c *i The present invention has for its purpose to provide a clamping and stretching device for holding the surface cloth on an ironing board, the aim being to'provide means arranged on the underface of the ironing board adjacent themarginal edge thereof and actua ated by a singlemember, for not only holding the cloth in position, but also stretching the same, in order'to prevent the cloth from wr1nkl1ng or folding n such a manner. as to hinder the passage ofthe 1ron over the surface of the article which is being ironed or pressed. 1

The invention still further aims to provide rocking members on the underface of the board adjacent the longitudinal edges thereof andadjacent'th'e curved end edges and provided with" cloth attaching means or pegs, in combination witha sin'gle actuator operatively connected with the rotating members, for stretching and. clamping the cloth.

' While the design and construction at present illustrated and set forth is deemed preferable, it is obvious that as a result of a reduction of the invention to a more practical form for commercial purposes, the invention may be susceptible of changes, and the right to these changes is claimed, provided they are comprehended within the scope of what is claimed.

The invention comprises further features and combination of parts, as will be hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed. r

In the drawings Figure 1 is a view in edge elevation of an ironing board, showing the improved. stretching and clamping means as applied and illustrating the pressing cloth clamped in position.

Fig. 2 is a bottom plan. view of the ironing board, also showing the edge portlons of the cloth engaging said rotating members.

a conventional form of ironing board or an ironinglaundry press head, and mounted in bearings 2 of the undersurface thereof adjacent its longitudinal edges are rocking rods3. These. rods are provided with radial arms 4-. Mounted in bearings 5 on the undersurface of the ironing board ad- .jacent the curved edge of the smaller end bearings .12 adjacent the curved edge of the larger end of the ironing board, and are provided with radial arms 13.

'Rockably mounted 'n bearings'la of the underface of the board in a direction longitudina-lly 'of the center of the board is a shaft or rod 15 provided with diametrically opposite radial arms 16'and17'. Links 18 operatively connect the arms 4 and 16 of the rods 3 and 15. In fact the links have lateral extensions 19 pivotally engaging the arms l and 16.

A pair of links 20 have their adjacent forked ends 21 straddling the arms 17 of the shaft or rod 15, there being pivot pins 22 passing through the forks and throughthe arms. The remote ends of the links 20 extend at obtuse angles and have forks 23, which straddle the arms 13. Pivot pins 24 pass through the forks 23 and the arms 13, thereby pivotally conneeting the parts.

The rocking rods 3, 6 and 11 respectively have books 25, 26, and 27, which are engaged by the metallic line openings or eyelets 28 of the pressing cloth 29, which is stretched and clamped over the padding of an ordinary ironing board. The single rod, shaft or operating member 15 has secured thereto a collar 31, which is provided with a handle 32.

It will be noted that by rocking the rod or shaft 15 in the direction of the arrow a, the rods 3, 6 and 11 will be moved in the directions indicated by the arrows b, there by pulling the pressing cloth over the edges of the ironing board and stretching the cloth over the surface of the padding, thereby preventing the cloth from wrinkling or becoming folded, which would prevent the passage of the iron over the material being pressed. It will be noted that a clamping and stretching mechanism of the present 7,

character may be easily applied to any suit able pressing supports with many advantages. For instance the pressing cloth may be evenly stretched over the surface, and

all parts thereof stretched simultaneously,

thereby preventing the cloth from being tensioned or stretched at one placev more than the other, and hence avoiding splitting or tearing of the cloth.

Carried by the rocking rod or shaftl is bers upon its undersurface adjacent the side and end edges thereof, and a single means peratively connecting with said members for operating them simultaneously.

In a cloth clamping and stretching mechanism, a pressing member, rocking elements mounted in hearings on the undersurface of the pressing memberadjacent its 7 longitudinal and end edges, coupling means I unlting certain of the rocking members, cloth connecting means son said members, and a single rotating element operatively connected to certain other of the rocking members, for drawing :the cloth'tight over the surface of the pressing member.
