To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN F. TRAUTMANN, of the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Horse-Collars, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.

My invention relates to certain improvements in horse-collars; and my invention consists in features of novelty hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.

Figure I is a view looking at the rim side of my improved horse-collar. Fig. II is an edge 'view. detail perspective views showing the manner of forming the collar. Fig. VI is a section taken on line VI VI, Fig. V. Fig. VII represents a modification.

My present invention refers to a horse-collar of the general construction of the collar shown and described in my patent, No. 277,857, dated May 15, 1883.

In the present construction the rim A is connected or joined to thefacing O and the backing B, the same as in the patent mentioned, where they are indicated by the same letters.

My present invention relates only to the manner of connecting the outer edge of the facing to the backing; and it consists in first securing to the backing a narrow strip 1 (see Fig. III) of leather, or other suitable material. To the outer edge of this strip is secured the outer edge of the facing C, as shown at 2, Fig. IV. The collar is next stuffed, and then the outer edge of the backing is folded over the Figs. III, IV, and V are enlarged point of connection between the strip and the facing, and is secured to the facing, as shown at 3, Fig. V, at a point remote from the edge of the latter. I

In the modification shown in Fig.VII a row of stitches4 is made in the backing in lieu of the strip 1, to which the edge of the facing is secured by stitches 5.

The use of this invention results in a strong durable collar very easily made. It also results in a saving of leather, as the shoulderpiece ordinarily used on collars, and which is shown in my patent referred to, can be dispensed with.

I claim as my invention- 1. In a horse-collar, the combination of the roll, facing and backing, the outer edge of the facing being connected to the backing and the outer edge of the backing being folded over the point of connection between it and the facing and being itself secured to the facing at a point remote from the edge of the latter, substantially as set forth.

2. In a horse-collar, the combination, with the roll, facing and backing, of a narrow strip secured to the under orin ner side of the back ing and to which strip the outer edge of the facing is connected, the outer edge of the backing being folded over the point of connection between said strip and facing and being itself secured to the facing at a point remote from the edge of the latter, substantially as set forth.
