To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FRANK HAYS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oskaloosa, in the county of Mahaska and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Horse-Collar Attachments, of which the following is a specification.

Horse-collars of the type that open at the top have heretofore generally been constructed at the upper meeting edges with leather binding-pieces that are sewed across. The stitches soon become worn and the seam rips, and the straw at the top of the collar protrudes with a construction of such character, and, furthermore, if the leather bindingstrips be either sewed or riveted they will in a short time break down after becoming wet or sweaty, so that the collar will not fit the horse naturally and will not preserve the proper peak.

The object of my invention is to avoid the disadvantages above noted and to produce a horse-collar with an improved metallic edge binding-clasp constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.

For a full description of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of the means for effecting the result reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a horsecollar embodying the improvements of my invention. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective View of one of the edge clasps, showing it in its condition preparatory to being clenched upon the collar. Fig. 3 is a similar view of the complementary clasp.

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.

The horse-collar 1 may be made in any of the approved forms and of any desired construction, and it is open at the top, as shown.

My improved edge clasps 2 are designed to be clenched along the meeting edges of the collar at the top, and each of said clasps is made, preferably, of one integral piece of metal slightly curved both longitudinally and transversely and comprises generally a substantially U-shaped structure in crosssection, the edges of which are provided with Specification of Letters Patent.

clenching-tangs 3. The clasps are constructed in pairs, and preferably one clasp is provided with an integral side extension-piece 4 and the other with a corresponding extension-piece 5, the former being provided with a slot 6.

In the manufacture of the collar embodying my invention the edges at the top are embraced by my improved edge clasps 2 and then by pressure exerted upon the said clasps through the instrumentality of any desired machinery the tangs 3 will clench into the leather at opposite sides, and hence by this simple operation the edge clasps are securely attached in place to bind the edges of the collar from rear side to peak, so that there is no liability of the peak breaking down even with hard use, and neither is there any liability of the collar breaking out at the edges to allow the straw to protrude.

The fastening devices may consist of a strap 7, one end of which is inserted through the slot 6 and is fastened to the collar underneath the extension-piece 4, and a buckle 8, which is secured to the other extension-piece 5, the latter and the extension-piece 4 being riveted, preferably by rivets, which pass through the collar and are riveted on the opposite side.

From the foregoing description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, it is evident that not only is the operation of forming the edge of the collar in its completed condition rendered simple and cheap by my invention, but that my improved metallic edge-binding clasps will securely hold the edge of the collar in perfect form as long as the collar may be worn, said clasps also constituting, by means of their integral extension-pieces, suitable means for ready attachment thereto of the strap-and-buckle connection between the ends of the collar.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. A horse-collar, provided at its edges with binding-clasps clenched thereto each of said clasps being provided with a side extension-piece, and a buckle and strap connected to said side extension-pieces respectively.

2. A horse-collar provided at its edges with binding-strips formed with side extension pieces integral therewith and one of which is provided with a slot, a strap inserted through said slot and fastened to the collar underneath one of the extension-pieces and a buckle secured to the other extension-piece. 3.
