Specilcation forming part of Letters Patent No. 44,468, dated September 27, 1864.

To all whom, it may concern.-

Be it known that I, AERAM H. SEAMAN, of Coxsackie, in the county of Greene and State ot New York, have invented a new and Improved Well-Curb and Windlass; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reterence being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side sectional view of my invention, taken in the line a: Fig. 2; Fig. 2, a horizontal section of the same, taken in the line yy, Fig. 1.

Similar letters of reference indicate correspending parts in the two iigures.

This invention relates to a new and iinproved means employed for tilting the bucket in order that its contents may be discharged.

The object of the invention s to obtain a weil curb and windlass which will he exceedA ingly simple in construction, not liable to become deranged by use, and which may be constructed by any one ot' ordinary ingenuity.

To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention, I will proceed to describe it.

A represents a box or curb, which is placed over the top of the well, and may be constructed in any suitable manner, as desired.

B represents a horizontal shaft, 'which is placed in the upper part of the box or curb and has a crank, C, at one end of it.

D is a bucket, which may be of the usual or any proper form, and provided at its bottom with a valve, E, opening upward. This bucket is connected with the shaft B by means of a rope or chain, F.

To the rear of the bucket D, and at a point rather below its center, there is alaclzled a hook, G, and in the box or curb j. there are fitted two horizontal rods, H Hf, one, H, being below the other, H', and nearer the back ot' the box or curb, as shown in Fig. l.

I is a spout fitted in the front of the box or curb to conduct the water discharged from'the bucket into the pail or other receptacle prepared to receive it.

The operation is as follows: The bucket D is filled when it enters the water in the well on account of thel valve E rising, said valve closing as the bucket is raised and retaining the water in the bucket. When the bucket has been fully raised by turning the shaft B, the hook G will be above the rod Hf, and by gently lowering the bucket under a reverse motion of the shaft B the hook G will catch on the rod H and theA bucket will tilt by virtue of its own gravity and the water be discharged into the spout I, the bottom of the bucket in tilting coming in contact with the lower rod, H, and causing the hook G, by the time the bucket is fully emptied, to slip oit' from the rod H', and admit of the bucket descending into the well to be again filled. Thus by this simple arrangement a very efcient well-curb and windlass is obtained, and one that may be operated without any special care or attention.

Having th us described. my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The hook G, attached to the bucket D, in connection with the rods H H in the box or curb A, and the shaft or windlass B, all arranged to operate in the manner substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
