BOOT OR SHOE LAST,

Be it known that we, LOUIS SAUKS and HENRY RICHMOND, citizens of the United States, and residents of Newark, county of Essex, State of New Jersey, have invented a new anduseful Improvement in Boot or Shoe Lasts, of which the following is a full and true description. a

Our invention relates to boot or shoe lasts, and more particularly to iron lasts with standards used in pegging and nailing, the essential feature and object being the arrangement of an adjustable standard to an adjustable foot, so that itwill meet the requirements of several separatelasts by its peculiar construction, more fully described farther on and illustrated bythe accompanying drawings, in which like letters refer to like parts in each.

Figure 1 represents our last in a horizontal position. Fig. 2 represents our lastin an oblique position. Fig. 3 represents a cross-section of the last. Fig. at represents a crosssection of the end of the post.

A is the last, and B the standard or post.

A is a socket in the last.

B is the end of the post adapted to be engaged in the socket of the last A.

a or represent two sides of the socket of the last, and b 1) two sides of the end of the post or standard B, which engage in the socket of the last A.

It will be seen that the socket A of the last A is of a peculiar form, adapted to engage the end or head of the standard B, one side of which runs in a vertical line and the other in an oblique line, or at an angle of about forty degrees; and it will also be observed that the socket A in the last Alias one of its sides vertical and the other at a corresponding angle with that of the socket, thus making it possible for any person using the last to adjust it on the standard in a horizontal position, or by removing and turning it around to adjust it in an oblique position. (See Figs. 1 and 2.)

\Ve are aware that lasts are made both for horizontal and oblique positions and are used at the present time; but so far as our knowledge extends we believe this to be the first and only combination of a last and standard which can be used for both purposes.

\V e do not confine ourselves to any angle for adjustment of the last, but prefer one of about forty degrees; also, we prefer iron or metal in the construction of the same, but it may be made of any suitable material.

Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The combination, in a reversible boot or shoe last, of the standard 13, terminating in a fiat tenon B, having one of its edges vertical and the other inclined, and a last A, having a narrow elongated socket or mortise, with one of its edge walls vertical and the other inclined, corresponding in shape with the inclination and vertical edges of the tenon on the standard and adapted to engage the same, as herein described and set forth.
