Description

G. V. WELLS. Boot and Shoe Nailing Lasts.. No. 198,958.
Patented Jan. 8, 1878..
N. PETERS, PHOTD UTHDGRAPHER. WASHINGTON, D. C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OEETcE.
GUSTAVUS V. WELLS, OF MONMOUTH, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN BO OT AND SHOE NAILING LASTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 198,958, dated January 8, 1878; application filed June 9, 1877.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GUSTAVUS V. WELLS, of Monmouth, in the county of Warren and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boot and Shoe Nailing Lasts; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in metallic lasts of that class which are pivoted on standards and used for clinching nails, breaking down the points of pegs, &c.; and the invention consists in constructing the adjacent parts of the last and the-standard so that when the last is turned into one position the parts will abut and form a firm seat for the last, and when the last is turned into another position a wedge-shaped block may be inserted for forming a firm seat, all as hereinafter fully described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a construction embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation. Fig. 3 is a side elevation. Fig. 4. is a side elevation. Fig. 5 is a perspective View of the block.
Referring to the parts by letters, A repre sents the standard, seated in any suitable base, B. The upper end of the standard A is enlarged, and its front upper portion a horizontal, and rear portion a at an angle thereto, as shown in the drawings.
0 is a short pivot-standard, projecting upward from the main standard A. Dis the metallic last, and has a d, recessed to receive the standard 0, which is pivoted therein by a pivot-bolt, d.
When the last is adjusted on the standard A, as shown at Fig. 4, at about a right angle with the standard, the part at will rest upon the part a of the standard and form a firm seat, and while in this position nails in the heel and shank of a boot or shoe may be clinched thereon.
'Io project the last into the toe of boots or shoes longer than the last, it can be turned up into the position shown at Figs. 1 and 2, with the part d resting on the part a of the standard, and then, by inserting the wedge-shaped double-pronged block E, as shown at Fig. 3, it may be firmly held for clinching nails, &c.', in the toe of the boot or shoe.
What I. claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The standard A, having a horizontal face, a, and oblique or inclined face a, arranged to operate in combination with the last D and removable block E, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GUSTAVUS v. WELLS.
