Description
(No Model.) W. S. MARSHALL' BOX FASTENER Patentved Deo. 16, 1890.
INVENTOR UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
TINFIED SCOTT MARSHALL, OF OENTRALIA, ILLINOIS.
BOX-FASTEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 442,903, dated December 16, 1890.
Application filed September 2511890. Serial No. 366,168. (No model.)
To all whom, it may conoern:
Be it known that I, WINEIELD SCOTT MAR- sHALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Centralia, in the county of Marion and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clasps or Lid- Fasteners; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in clasps designed for use on satchels, Valises,
boXes, or trnnks, the object being to provide a clasp-fastening that will be secure and reliable and at the same time easily unfastened when desired.
The invention consists in the combination of parts hereinafter fully described, and
pointed out,in the claim.
' In the drawings, Figure I is a perspective view showing' my improved clasp attached to the front of the trunk or satchel, only a small part of thelatter being shown. Fig. 2 is a similar view with the sections of the clasp separated. Figs. 3 and 4 illustrate modifications.
A represents one of the Sections of the clasp, preferably formed of a single piece of spring metal and provided with an upper lip or hook a and projecting spring-arms B B. The section A is also provided with projections h, upon which the upper section bears when the clasp is fastened and with edge springs or flanges a'. This section A is secured by rivets or otherwise to the lower partor body O of the trunk or satchel.
D is another section of the clasp formed at its lower end with a finger-piece cl. This section is pivotally secured to the cover of the trnnk or box by means of a riveted Strap or loop F, which embraccs the edge of the cover and the cross-bar f of the section, as shown.
The lower end of the strap or loop F rests upon the projecting hook or loop a of the section A, and the upper section D is by means of its finger-piece forced over the edge flanges of the section A, and said hook a and fianges (t', together with the springs B B, hold the parts firmly together. The edge fianges may be formed on either the sides or at the lower end of the section A, Figs. 1 and 3, and the Springs B B may be turned either inwardly or outwardly, Fig. 4, as preferred. VVhen outwardly-turned Springs are used, the slot or opening C12 in the pivoted section needonly be of sufficient size to allow the hook a to project through it.
It will be observed that the two sectionsA and D are firmly held together not only by the springs B B, but are held at the ends of the Sections, respectively, by the hook a and edge iianges.
An important feature of my impr'ovement is found in the coaction of the hook a and the edge or supplernental Springs a' a'. The section D has its pivotal point within the hook, and the spring action of the edge tlanges serves to hold the section D firmly after it is forced over said fianges.
111 Fig. 2 the ends of the edge springs a' a' constitute Shoulders (L4 (L4, against which the lower cross-bar af' of the section D bears. I-Ience it will be seen that I not only secure the section D by the springs B B, but also firmly hold said section against endwise play by the hook a and the edge Springs. The section D and its securing-strap F are both supported by the hook a.
I form all of the parts of the section A from a single piece of spring metal, thus affording a light and effective fastening and avoiding a multiplicity of parts.
I claim-- A clasp-fastening consisting of a section A, formed from a single piece of spring metal and provided with int'egrai side Springs, a supporting hook or lip a and supplemental edge Springs or flanges, and a pivoted section through which the hook a projects, and with a finger-piece, said pivoted section, together with its securing device, being supported upon the hook a when the parts are secured together, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
lVINFIELD SCOTT MARSHALL.
llfitnesses;
D. S. MARsHALL, ED. A. CORNELL.
