PIN-TONGUE FOR BREASTPiNS.

Be it known that I, AnoLrH THOMMEN, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pin-Tongues for Breastpins and other Ornaments, of which the following is a specification.

This invention has reference to an improved construction of pin-tongues for breastpins and similar ornaments, which can be conveniently applied to the body of the breastpins, readily opened for use, and convenientlyhaudled for being applied to the fabrics; and the invention consists of a pin-tongue provided with a curved flattened end having a transverse depression, a socket on the body of the breastpin, and means for fastening the wider end of thepin-tongue to said socket.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a rear view, Fig. 2, a side view, and Fig. 3, a vertical transverse section, of a breastpin with my improved pin-tongue, and Figs. 1, 5, and 6 are, respectively, a rear view, a side view, and a vertical transverse section of a breastpin with a modified form of pin-tongue.

Referring to the drawings, A represents a breastpin or other suitable article, and B a pin-tongue, which is pointed at one end and provided with an enlargement at the opposite end, which is flattened and made gradually wider, as shown in Fig. 1. The enlarged end 5 is bent backward and provided with a transverse depression, I). The enlarged and bent end bis passed through a socket, d, and secured by a transverse pin, 6, that passes through a transverse hole of the socket (2 across the depression Z), so as to lock the pin to the body of the breastpin.

In place of the transverse lockingpin a clampscrew, wedge, or other suitable fasttening device for attaching the pin-tongue to the body of the breast-pin may be employed. The pointed end of the pin is retained in a guard, f, of any approved construction. By thus fastening the bent and enlarged endof the pin-tongue a certain elasticity is imparted to the same, which opens it to such an extent, as shown in Fig. 2, as is required for conveniently passing the pintongue through the fabric. \V hen closing the breastpin, the pin-tongue is pressed downward un- (No model.)

til it is retained by the guard. The flattened or enlarged end serves as a spring and holds the pin-tongue securely in the guard and prevents it from getting detached and lost. When it is desired to open the pin-tongue entirely, the bent and enlarged end I) may be formed in the shape of a sleeve and hinged in the usual manner, it being provided with a heel, 9, that imparts the required spring to the pin-tongue, as shown in Figs. 5 and 6.

My improved pin-tongue has the advantage that it has increased elasticity, caused by the fiat hammered and enlarged spring end, which is made of somewhat thicker stock than the pin-tongue. Secondly, as the bend oi" the pin-tongue is arranged back of the socket it enlarges the space for the fabric, so that the same is not compelled to stop at the hinge or socket, which is of considerable importance with small breastpins and brooches, as it gives about one-eighth of an inch greater space for the fabric. Thirdly, the method of fastening the pintongue to its socket is much simpler, as the fastening device can be easily and quickly tightened without requiring any regulating motion of the pin-tongue.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination, with a breastpin or other article having a socket applied thereto, of a pin-tongue having an enlarged bent and flattened end inserted into and passing through said socket, and a key or locking-pin for attaching the enlarged end of the pin-ton ue to said socket, substantially as set forth.

2. The combination, with a breastpin or other article having a socket or keeper, of a pin-tongue having an enlarged bent and flat tened end provided with a transverse de pression, and a transverse locking-pin passed through the transverse hole of the socket and across the depression of the enlarged end, sub stantially as set forth.
