(No Model.)
' J. M. PARRAR. BUILDING BLOCK.
No. 439,641. Patented Nov. 4,1890.
ATTORNEY? UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN M. FARRAR, OF CANTON, OHIO.
BUILDING-BLOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 439,641, dated November 4, 1890. Application filed February 13, 1890- Serial No. 10,281. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN M. FARRAR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ganton, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Building-Blocks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in which Figure 1 is a view showing my improved blocks placed in a wall. Fig. 2 is a detached view of one of the building-blocks.
The present invention has relation to building-blocks; and it consists in the peculiar construction hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents a block designed and calculated to be used in the straight portions of the wall. B represents a block designed and calculated to be used at the corners of the wall. The blocks A are formed with the longitudinal openings a, and are provided with the side extensions b, which are formed or continued upon opposite sides of the block proper, as illustrated in Fig. 2. These blocks A and B are placed in the wall in such a manner that the side extensions 19 will abut one against the other, thereby preventing any lateral displacement of the block.
For the purpose of providing a space. for mortar or cement the side extensions 1) are so formed that a space, as O,will be between the inner faces of the side extensions 6, and at the same time leaving the outer faces of the building-blocks A in line, as illustrated in Fig. 1. It willbe seen that when the blocks are placed in proper position the longitudinal openings a will run the entire length of the wall, thereby forming air-passages.
For the purpose of closing the openings at at the corners of a wall the blocks B are provided with the vertical openings 0. One end of the corner-blocks B is formed square for the purpose of forming a close tight joint across the entire end of the corner-block, as illustrated in Fig. 1. If desired, these cornerblocks B may be provided with the strengthening-partition d.
In use the corner-blocks B are preferably formed of diiferent lengths for the purpose of properly connecting and filling out a tier of blocks; but it will be seen that the same object may be accomplished by providing blocks A of different lengths. The blocks B are provided upon one of their ends with the side extensions 1), which are for the purpose of meeting the side extensions 1), as illustrated in Fig. 1.
For the purpose of providing a surface for mortar or cement to adhere to, and thereby bind the blocks together, the partition (1' is provided, which partition is cut through its center, as illustrated in Fig. 1. Said partition also serves the purpose of strengthening the building-blocks proper.
In Fig. 1 a portion of one of the blocks A is shown cut away for the purpose of illustrating one of the openings at.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
As an improved article of manufacture, the herein-described building-block A, provided with the longitudinal openings at and the ex tensions b, extended from opposite sides or portions of the block, and the partition 61', substantially as shown and described, and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
JOHN M. FARRAR.
