DIE-STOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 434,820, dated August 12, 1890.

.To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JAMES M. CARPENTER, of Pawtucket, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and Improved Die-Stock, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates toimprovements in die-stocks; and the object of my invention is to produce a die-stock having guides therein to hold a bolt in position, said guides having an easy means of Operation, and also to provide means for fixing the position of the guides and regulating the friction of the same.
To these ends myinvent-ion consists in certain features of construction and combinations of parts, which will be hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a plan View of the device. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same, taken on a line with the die-stock handle; and Fig. 3 is an inverted plan view of the device.
The die-stock A is provided with the usual handles A, by which it may be turned, and also carries the usual form of screw-cutting dies B. In the lower portion of the die-stock and located upon opposite sides, so as to extend partially across the same, are slides or ways a, having suitable flanges of, said slides being adapted to carry the guides b, the diestock A having recesses a at the outer ends of the ways a to aiford space for the movement of the guides 17. The guides 11 fit closely in the ways a, between the side flanges a of the ways, and are adapted to move longitudinally in said ways. The inner ends of the guides 12 are notched, as shown, so that the united or abutting ends of the guides will form a rectangular openingb The guides 19 are cut away on their opposite inner corners, so as to form the interlocking shoulders 11 said shoulders being long enough to allow the adjustment of the guides to varying sizes of bolts and still permit one shoulder to rest against a corresponding shoulder of the opposite guide.
The guides b are provided on their under sides with pins which project through the slots 0 of the plate C, which is attached to the lower face of the die-stock and has a central opening for the passage of a bolt. The slots 0 are located at diametrically-opposite por tions of the plate 0, and are eccentrically curved, as best shown in Fig. 3, so that when the plate 0 is turned in one direction the guides 11 will be forced toward each other, and when the plate is turned in the opposite direction the guides will be forced apart.-
Located in opposite portions of the plate 0, and at right angles with the slots 0, are the opposite segmental slots 0', and projecting through said slots are the screws E, which fit in suitably-threaded holes in the ears D on opposite inner sides of the die-stock. The plate will be thus held in position upon the die-stock by the screws E, and the slots 0 should be long enough to permit the plate 0 to be turned sufi'iciently to move the guides b the full length of their stroke.
It will be seen that by tightening the screws I E sufficiently the plate 0 may be clamped se curely upon the die-stock and will bind the guides b and hold them in a fixed position, and by manipulating the screws the ease with which the guides can be moved may be'thereby regulated. The guides I) should be so arranged in relation to the die-stock and plate 0 that the opening b between the ends of the guides will be exactly in the center of the die-stock.
To operate the device, the bolt upon which the thread is to be cut is inserted through the central opening in the plate 0, and between the ends of the guides b, into the screw cutting dies B. The plate 0 is then turned so as to force the guides b upon the bolt, and they will hold it in position, so that the thread will be accurately out thereon. It will be seen that by tightening the plate 0, so that it will bind upon the guides, they willv be held firmly in position, so that they cannot get out of place.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- Y 1. The combination, with adie-stock having transverse ways upon opposite sides thereof, of guides adapted to slide in said ways, said guides having projecting pins thereon, as
shown, and a plate adj ust-ably secured to the die-stock, having eccentrically-ourved slots therein to engage the pins of the guides and actuate the same, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with a die-stock having transverse ways oppositely located therein, of guides adapted to slide in the ways, having notched ends and interlocking shoulders, as shown, and having projecting pins thereon, and a plate adjustably secured to the diestock, so as to turn thereon, said plate having oppositely and eccentrically curved slots therein to engage the pins of the guides, substantially as described.
3. The combination, With a die-stock having opposite transverse Ways therein and having opposite and inwardly-projecting ears at right angles with the said ways, of guides having notched ends and interlocking shoulders, said guides being adapted to move in the ways,
and having projecting pins thereon, a plate having oppositely-curved slots, screws projecting through said slots and into the ears of the die-stock, and eccentrically-curved slots at right angles to the screw-slots and adapted to engage the pins of the guides, substantially as described.
4. The combination, with the die-stock A, having ways a and recesses a therein, of the guides I), having the interlocking shoulders b the projecting pins b and the notched ends, as shown, the plate 0, having the slots 0 therein to engage the pins of the guides, and means, as slots 0 and screws E, for attaching the plate to the die-stock, substantially as described.
