'NITED STATES FBEDERIG E. WELLS, OF GREENFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS.
DIE-STOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 311,549, dated February 3, 1885. 7
Application filed March 5, 1884. (N0 model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FREDERIO E. WELLS, of Greenfield, in the county of Franklin and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Die-Stock for Cutting Screw- Threads on Bolts, Pipe, or other Articles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, making part ofthis specification, similar letters of reference indicating corresponding parts.
The object of my invention is to provide an adjustable die, which can be changed in size to allow for a small difference in size or to allow for wear occasioned by use.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a top view of the dies and die-holder. A A Fig. 2 is a side sectional view through the center of the dies, die-ho1der, and guide G,for the bolts or article to be threaded, also the adj ustingscrews D D. Fig. 3 is an end sectional view of the dies, dieholder, and guide, through the center.
The dies A A are beveled on the edges, as shown in Fig. 3, the lower part being wider than the top. The die-holder has a rectangular opening through the top and is beveled to fit the dies. On the lower inside part of it it is cylindrical and has a screw-thread out in the The guide 0 is flat on top, has a hole same.
through it in the center for the work to pass through, and the outside edge is threaded. to fit the screw-thread in the die-holder. The screws D D are for the purpose of adjusting the dies. The dies A A being placed in the holder B from the under side, the guide 0 is screwed into the holder, with the top pressing against the under side of the dies. The bevel on the dies and the corresponding bevel on the holder prevent the dies from going any higher than to fill the space in the holder, and the guide on the lower side holds both halves of the die securely'in place and in line with each other, while the adjustingscrews hearing on the ends of dies prevent the dies from moving backward, and the friction on the dies, caused by the pressure of the guide and dieholder when screwed together, prevents them from moving toward each other.
WhatI claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, 1s-
The die-stock comprehending the dies A A, the die-holder B, and the guide 0, all constructed, arranged, and secured together, substantially as shown and described.
FREDERIO E. lVELLS.
