SALT BOX.
'Patented Aug. 12.1890.
1 WHA/5885s: la] M UNITED STATES PATENT @risica ABRAHAM HIRSCIAI, OF .IERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY.
SALT-BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 44,083, dated August 12, 1890.
Application filed June 12, 1890. Serial No. 355,176. (No model.)
of a sheet-metal salt-box in which the front wall, bottom, and rear wall of the body are made integral with an upward extension of the rear wall that is provided with an opening for suspending the salt-box, said extension and the upper edge of the body being re-enforced by a wire that is bent at right angles at the connection of the body with the rear wall, as will be fully described hereinafter, and finally pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my improved salt-box. Fig.- 2 is a vertical transverse section, and Fig. 3 a front view, of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre-v sponding parts.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the sheet-metal body of my improved saltbox, which body is preferably made of rectangular cross-section and formed of three pieces, one piece comprising the front Wall a, bottom a', and rear wall d2, which are made in one piece, while the remaining two pieces b b form the side walls, which are soldered to the edges of the front wall, bottom, and rear wall, as shown clearly in Figs. 1 and 3. The
. rear wall a2 is extended for a suitable length above the lid B and provided with an opening a4, by which the salt-box may be suspended from a hook' or nail on the wall. 4 The upper edge of the body A and the edges of the extension a3 of the rear wall a2 are reenforced by a wire d, around which the upper edges of the body A and of the extension d3 are folded, said wire being bent at right angles at the point where the upper edge of the body meets the rear wall d2, and serving to impart the necessary strength to the body and extension of the box.. The body A, as
well as the under side of the lid B, is covered with a lining of wood A B', which serves for the purpose of keeping the salt in the box in dry condition, so as to prevent the caking` or packing ot' the same. The wood lining B of the lidB is rabbeted at the edges, so as to form a seat that rests on the upper edge of the wood lining A ot the box A, while the lid B itself extends over the edge of the body A, as shown clearly in Figs. 2 and 3. In this manner a tight joint between the lid and body is formed, whereby the salt is protected to some extent against the influence of the moisture in the air and prevented from caking in the box. The hinge-connection between the lid B and the extension a5 of the rear wall of the body A is formed by lugs e and e', which are bent up, respectively, from the lid B and extension a3, and of pivots c2 and washers e3, that are interposed, respectively, between the enlarged heads of the pivots e2 and the lugs e and e. The wood lining Al of the body A is formed in the nature of a box open at thetop which is slid into the body A, while the wood lining of the lid B is riveted tothe latter, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3.
My improved construction of salt-box is also adapted for bread-boxes and similar structures, in which case, however, the extension- Wall a3 is dispensed with.
The advantages of my improved salt-box are, that owing to the wood lining of the box and lid, and the tight closing of the latter, the salt is kept dry and prevented from absorbing moisture so as to cake; secondly, that a box of this construction is more durable than the wooden boxes in use, which, after some time, shrink and go to pieces While also giving a free access of air, so that the salt is not kept dry enough for use; thirdly, that by japanning the exterior of the box in the nature of the ordinary spice-boxes in general use, the salt-box is in keeping with the exterior appearance of the other sheet-metal roo comprising the front Wall, bottom, and rear body being provided with an extension of its Wall and the upward extension of the latter, rear Wall, which is made integral with the andtwo side Walls which are soldered to the front Wall, bottom, and rear Wall, substan- 1 .sides of the main piece, and a re-enforeing tially as set forth. I 5 5 Wire extending along the upper edges of the In testimony that I claim the foregoing as body and the edges of the extension, submy invention I have signed my name in presstantially as set forth. ence of two subscribing Witnesses.
2. A salt-box consisting of a sheet-metal ABRAHAM HIRSCI-l. body having an interior lining of Wood7 a Witnesses: xo hinged lid of sheet metal, having also a wood CARL SCHUMANN,
lining attached to 'the lid, said sheet-metal EMIL SCHUMANN.
