IMPROVED MODE 0F PREVENTING MlLDEW IN CANVAS, CLOTH, dc.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 43,233, dated June 21, 1864.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM STACEY, of Kittery, in the county of York, in the State of Maine, have invented a new Mode ofPreserving Canvas from the Effects of Mildew and the consequent rot, of which the following is a specification.
The nature of my invention consists simply of dissolving blue vitriol in water, either fresh or salt, in quantity sufficient to lightly color the water and thoroughly wash or wet the sail in the liquid, and the sail or tent may be rolled up wet or dried, as the case may be, and the efi'ect will be that rot or mildew cannot touch it in the least.
In preparing the liquid for dipping or wetting the canvas I dissolve about one pound of blue vitriol to a barrel of water.
The application of this solution will prevent mildew and also preserve the canvas or cloth from decay. The application of the solution to white canvas will give a slightly-green tinge. This may be immediately removed by the application of lime-water to the canvas, or it will gradually disappear on exposure to the weather.
1 have given what I regard as the best proportions and mode of application; but I do not want to limit myself to these, as I have found that the proportions may be varied and
