Description

(N0 Model.)v
J. T. HERTY. HANGER FOR TROLLEY WIRES.
No. 431,973. Patented July 8, 1890.
A INVENTOR: da
WITNESSES UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN THOMAS HERTY, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
HANG ER FOR TROLLE Y-WIRES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 431,973, dated July 8, 1890.
Application filed April 28, 1890. Serial No. 349,778. (No model.)
d To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN THOMAS HERTY, a citizen of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hangers for Trolleyires, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to those devices which are used to connect the trolley-wires of electric railways to the cross suspension-Wires.
My invention consists in a hanger constructed to make connection bet-Ween a cross feeder-wire and the trolley-Wire.
The accompanying drawingisaperspective View of my improved hanger.
1 is a trolley-wire, and 2 is a cross feederwire, which is connected at the side of the street to a main feeder.
The hanger has an upper web 3 with ears 4:, adapted to be clinched around the feederwire 2, and a lower web 5,having lips 6, adapted to be similarly clinched around the trolleywire; or the trolley-wire may be secured by brazing or solder. The two webs meet at the common axis and form a strong frame-work, which gives a substantial support and bracing for the trolley-wire. The whole forms a secure and reliable electric connection between the two wires which can be quickly and easily applied and presents as little obstruction to light as is compatible with the required strength.
Heretofore it has been the practice to connect the branch feeder-wires to the trolleywire independently of the hanger that supported the trolley-wire from the span-wire. In the present case the branch feeder is used as a span-wire and the hanger serves to form the electrical connection, the result being that a better mechanical and electrical connection is obtained with a less number of wires and other devices to obstruct the light.
WVhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with the trolley-wire and the cross feeder-wire, of a feeder-hanger having two vertical webs, one Web adapted to be secured to the feeder-wire and the other web adapted to be secured to the trolley-wire, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with the trolley-wire and the cross feeder-wire, of the feeder-hanger having two vertical webs at right angles to each other, one web provided with ears or clamps for the feeder-wire and the other web provided with ears or clamps for the trolleywire.
JOHN THOMAS HERTY.
