Description

E. PORTER.
Churn.
No. 43,040. Patented June 7, 1864.
UNITED STATES PATENT :OEFIcE.
EDWARD PORTER, OF TALLMADGE, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN CHURNS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 43,040, dated June 7, 1864.
T 0 all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWARD PORTER, of Talhnadge, in the county ofSummit and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful lm provementsinUhurns; and Ido hereby declare that the followingis a full and complete description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a top view, and Fig. 2 is a vertical section.
The nature of my invention relates to the form and body of the churn and the form and position of the heaters.
The body of the churn is much like a common water-pail, as shown at A B in Fig. 2; indeed, a common wooden pail may he used for that purpose. The bottom is slightly con cave, and around the top of the body is turned a seat, 0, for the cover. The cover D consists of a disk of wood having a diameter equal to the seat 0, which it accurately tits. There is a hole, D, in the center of the cover to admit the air. The shaft E, to which the heaters are attached, is placed obliquely in the body of the churn, as seen in Fig. 2. A step or box, F, is secured in the angle where the bottom and staves meet, in which the lower end of the shaft E rests. The shaft passes diagonally upward to the opposite side and out between the cover and the top of the body in a hearing made for that purpose, and the outer end of the shaft is formed into a crank, G, by means of which the shaft is rotated. The heaters H H are in pairs. The lower end of the upper pair, H, are attached to the arm I, and the upper ends of the lower pair are attached to the arm I. The opposite ends of both are secured to the upper and lower ends of the shaft respectively. These heaters consist of narrow strips of wood shaped so as to sweep closely to the bottom and sides of the churn. The shaft and heaters can be rotated in either direction by means of the crank G. The body of the churn is furnished with a hail, J, like a common pail, so that when not in use as a churn it can be used for other purposes, thus constituting a combined pail and churn.
WVhat I claim as my improvement, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The special arrangement of the detachable oblique shaft E, heaters H H, arms 1 I, and cover D, when used in connection with the body or pail B, and the whole so constructed as to make a churn and pail combined, as and for the purpose specified.
EDWARD PORTER.
