PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM TIBBITS, OF LAFAYETTE, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN CHURNS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 12,857, dated May :24, 1864.
T0 aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM TIBBITS, of the town of Lafayette, county of Onondaga, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Machine for Ghurnin g Butter; and I do hereby declare the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figures 1 and 2 are perspective views, and Fig. 3 is a transverse section.
The construction and operaion of my in vention is as follows, to wit:
Fig. 1 consists of a plain octagonal shaft, marked on the drawings 0, with heaters in the common form, in the central part of the shaft 0, marked a, and narrower bifurcated heaters at each end of the shaft 0, marked b. Letter d is the pivot end of the shaft 0, and is fastened in the body of the churn, Fig. 2, g g, and is represented by letter din Fig. 3. Letter 0 is the end of the shaft 0, fastened to the gearing, as shown by letter Z in Fig. 2.
Fig. 2 represents the body of the churn,
constructed in any of the known forms, with one side broken out, showing shaft 0 and the heaters a and bifurcated heaters b, Fig. 1,when placed in the churn. The gearing consists of two wheels, marked i and l. Thelarger wheel, 6, is attached to the body of the churn by means of a common flange, k, and the pinionwheel I to the shaft 0, in any of the common ways.
Fig. 3 represents a transverse section of the churn with shaft 0 and bifurcated heaters 11. The heaters a and b are set around the shaft 0 spirally each way from the center of said shaft, so that when the shaft 0 is in the ordinary motion the cream is forced from the center of the shaft 0 to each end upon the bifurcated heaters b, where it is more rapidly broken and the butter made. Then, by a reverse motion of the shaft 0 the butter is forced back upon the central heaters, a, and is gathered in the center of the churn, ready to be removed.
I do not claim as my invention the body of the churn, or the gear-wheels, or the use of the shaft and heaters set in a double-spiral or right-and left-hand screw; but
What I do claim as my improvement, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The plain and bifurcated heaters to b, when arranged in a reversed spiral form form, as described, in combination with the rectangular body g g, wheels 6 and l, the several parts being arranged and operating in the manner and for the purpose herein specified.
TM. TIBBITT.
