E ODELL CARPET STRETOHER.
$10,430,399 Patented June 17, 1890.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ERIE ODELL, OF ERIE, PENNSYLVANIA.
CARPET-STRETCHER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 430,399, dated June 17, 1890.
Application filed August 5, 1889. Serial No. 320,326. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ERIE ODELL, of the city of Erie, in the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Carpet-Stretchers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to carpet-stretchers; and it consists in certain improvements in the construction of the same, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the perspective View of the grappling-plate turned bottom side up. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one of the teeth on the grappling-plate. Fig. 6 is a top view of one of the teeth.
The device consists of grappling-knee pad, a spiked lever, and a chain or other flexible connection between the lever and the pad.
I am aware that carpet-stretchers have been heretofore made having a knee-pad for engaging the carpet, a spiked lever, and a connection between the lever and the pad, and I shall not claim these elementary parts or the combination thereof as my invention.
My invention consists in improvements in the construction of carpet-stretchers such as just described.
My improved carpet-stretcher is constructed as follows:
E is the lever, F the ferrule, and G the spike at the end of the lever.
D is a chain, which connects the lever E with the knee-pad at O. The knee-pad consists of an iron frame 0, having an inwardlyprojecting flange N on its lower side; a sheetmetal plate K, which is pressed into form to fit within and rest upon the flange N, and is provided with teeth, which are formed from the metal of the plate K by a punch or die; a backing block A, which sets Within the frame 0 and on the flange N and over the plate K, and, finally, a cushion B i, which is mounted on the block A. The parts contained within the frame 0 are held in place by nails or screws h, which are inserted through holes in the frame 0.
The teeth formed on the plate K constitute an essential part of my invention. They are formed by a punch or die, which cuts a V- shaped hole P in the metal, leaving the triangular fragment attached at its base, and its point or apex turned up from the plate at an angle thereto of about forty or forty-five degrees. The punch or die is so formed that it not only cuts or forms the V-shaped tooth, but it also turns it up at an angle to the plate, and also forms a ridge or rib on the back of the tooth from point to base, said rib being wide at the base and diminishing to the point of the tooth. This rib gives the tooth an arch orA form in cross-section. This rib is marked M in Fig. 5. Teeth thus formed are very strong and will not bend back under any strain that can be put upon them in ordinary use.
WVhat I claim as new is A grappling-plate for carpet-stretchers, consisting of asheet of metal stamped into proper form and having triangular teeth with longitudinal strengthening arches M, Which are wider at the base of the tooth and taper to its point, formed thereon by a die or punch, substantially asset forth.
WVitness my hand this 24th day of July, A. .D. 1889.
ERIE ODELL.
