SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 430,281, dated June 17, 1890.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HERRITT GALLY, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Printing- Presses, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention relates to printing-presses; and it consists in the novel construction, arrangement, and combination of the parts, as hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side view, partly sectional, of the body of a printing-press, showing the devices for controlling the motion of the platen and the inkdistribut-ing apparatus of the press in operating position. Fig. 2 is a face view of a part of the ink-distributing apparatus enlarged, and Fig. 3 is a face view of the impression-lock.
In my patent of November 9, 1886, No. 352,237, I describe and claim a plate, as A, Fig. 1, used as bed or platen of a press when supported upon a rocker or rockers, as R, and controlled in its movement by a link, as e; and in a subsequent application, Serial No. 263,864, filed February 13, 1888, I have described similar devices, except-that the link was removed to a position back of the pivot of the drawbar 0 and pivoted to a removable shoe, as H. In the present case the construction does not differ from the latter, except that the pivot-eye of the shoe H is located above the face of the rocker-seat S, instead of being on a line with the face of the rocker-seat. The

the same time held down during its short sliding movement for the impression by means of the lock N. The two locks N and 6 hold plate A practically parallel with plate B during the impression, so that a form may be worked out of center without slur.
- To facilitate readjustment of the lock Nin case of wear, I construct it as shown in Fig. 3. The lock N is shown as bolted to the projections of the rocker-seat D D. As a convenient means of allowing for take-up, I place underneath the shoulders of lock N, which rest on the rocker-seat, a number of very thin washers W, (shownin exaggerated proportions, Fig. 3,) of hard paper or thin sheet metal, one or more of which may at any time be removed to make up for the Wear of the lock or toe of the rocker. The removable shoe H allows also for take-up of any wear of the pivots of the link e, either by the insertion of washers or the grinding away of the plate or shoe H.
In Fig. 1 the roller for producing lateral change-distribution of the ink is shown at K as a metallic roller against a soft distributer d. The roller K may, however, if desirable, be a soft roller in contact directly with the distributing-cylinders V or T. The cylinders V T are supported in frame-work to the bed B in proper position for distributing the ink to be applied to the form F on bed B before the impression is made by plate A. Roller K is held in two slides ff, Fig. 2, which are supported in position in slideways WV in the frame-work of the press, as shown in Fig. 1. Roller K is provided with a pinion t, and while it is revolving has a reciprocating lateral movement produced by means of a staggered gear-wheel I), which meshes into pinion 25. The piniont is provided with collars or flanges 25 25, which are alternately in drivingcontact with wheel I). I have already made application for patent for this feature, the staggered wheel I) being pivoted to the hub Lof the slidef. Ihowever show an improvement in the present case. Through the slides ff, I bore two holes exactly in line and parallel with each other. One of the holes in each of the slides forms the bearing for one of the journals of roller K. To the other holes I fit closely a rod Z. I then adjust the slides ff exactly in line with each other, and
fasten them to the rod by means of pins or set-screws n n, as shown in Fig. 2. This construction prevents cramping of the gears to and secures an easy lateral motion to roller K. Roller K is revolved by frictional contact .with roller cl or cylinder V, as the case may by means of impression-cranks J-one for each side of the pressor by any other suitable means.
What I claim as my invention is 1. The bed or platen of the press, having a rocking motion and supported upon a rocker, as R, in combination with the link, as e, for controlling the rocking motion, and the look, as N, for holding the toe of the rocker firmly against the rocker-seat during theimpression, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of the platen having rockers attached, the rocker-seat, the lock for holding down and guiding the toe of the platen, and a lock connected to and guiding the heel of the platen during the final impression, substantially as described.
3. The combination, with the rocker-seat S and rocker R, of the lock, as N, applied to the toe of the rocker and made adjustable to provide for wear, substantially as set forth.
4:. The combination, with the bed or platen of the press, supported upon arocker or rockers, as R, and having a link, as e, pivoted to the heel of the rocker for controlling its rocking motion, of the shoe-eye, as H, having its pivot for the link situated above the rockerseat.
5. The combination, With the bed of the press and its supporting frame-Workfor the distributing apparatus, of the slide journalbearings f f for the lateral distributor K, the bearings f f being tied together by means of the connecting-rod, as Z, substantially as set forth.
6. The combination, with the journal-bearings, as f f of the lateral distributing-roller, as K, and the rod Z, the journal-seats and holes for the rod Z being made parallel with each other in the piecesff and firmly set in line by means of the pins or set-screws, substantially as set forth.
7. The combination, with the slides, as ff, and roller K, with pinion 25, of the rod Z and staggered wheel I), the rod Z forming the journal for wheel I), substantially as set forth.
