SLOP-JAR AND 'COMMODE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 427,627, dated May13, 1890.

To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOSIAH SHEPHERD, a citizen of the United States, residing at North Lewisburg, in the county of Ohampaign and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Slop-Jar and Commode, of which the following is a specification.

This invention has for its object the provision of a combined slop-jar and commode for use in bedrooms; and the invent-ion consists in certain features of construction hereinafter specified, and more particularly pointed out in the claim.

Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective of a combined slop-jar and commode constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail in perspective of the commode-seat.

Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in all the figures of the drawings.

1 represents a slop-jar, in this instance of plain cylindrical shape, and formed of sheet metal, but which may be formed of earthenware and given any desired shape. The jar is in this instance provided with an ordinary swinging hand-bail 2 and with an ordinary removable cover 3, the flange 4 of which is adapted to fit over andinclose the upperedge of the jar. The jar is provided upon itsinner surface and near its upper edge with inwardly-projecting supporting-lugs 5, andremovably seated upon the same and within the upper edge of the jar is a circular commodeseat 6, provided with the usual opening 7, and over the seat is a covering 8, of suitable materialsuch as, for instance, flannel.

Ordinarily the device is used as a slopjar, the seat removed, and when desired the seat may be inserted in position and the device used as a commode. Upon an upwardlycurved portion 9 of the cover of the jar I solder or otherwise secure a cylinder9,which is provided with a transverse slot 10. Upon the ends of the cylinder are mounted caps 11,.

ably mounted operating-knobs 15. The paper cylinder is preferably of sheet metal and is of such shape exteriorly as to serve as a handle for the cover, and in this instance isplain and cylindrical. The slot 10 is preferably formed by one edge overlapping the other, so that the upper overlapping edge 16 serves as a fixed knife against which the paper may be drawn and severed.

Having described my invention, what I claim is- The combination, with the cover, the paper-cylinder mounted thereon and having its edges overlapping and spaced apart to form a slot, and a fixed knife, of the perforated end caps, the paper-shaft journaled therein, the knobs on the ends of the shaft, and the web upon the shaft, and having its leading end passed through the slot and under the knife, substantially as specified.
