SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 427,617, dated May 13, 1890.

Be it known that 1, WILLIAM EZRA Ross, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Rein-Holder, of which the followingis a specification.

This invention relates to rein-holder's, and is an improvement upon an invention for which an application for Letters Patent, Serial No. 318,285, was filed by me July 24,1889; and the invention consists of the improved means for operating the movable half-clutch of said application, which means are fully described hereinafter, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front view of a buggy with my device attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a rear view of the dash-board of the buggy. Fig. 3 is a detached View of the mechanism for operating the movable half-clutch. Fig. 4 is a crosssection of the tube on line 4 4 of Fig. 2.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, 1

6 designates a gear-wheel upon the hub of one or both of the front wheels; 7, a transverse shaft journaled in front of the front axle; 8, a gear-wheel meshing with the gear 6; 9, a stationary half-clutch keyed to said shaft; 10, a movable half-clutch on said shaft 11, the teeth of said clutches; 12, a spring for keeping the half-clutches norm ally apart, and 13 the drum 011 the movable clutch, all as shown in my other application above referred to.

14 designates a vertical tube having longitudinal grooves 15, which tube is secured to the inner face of the dash-board. 16 is a pair of clamps sliding in said grooves, and 17 is a strap connected to the lower clamp and passing through a hole 18 in the bottom of the wagon-body, with its lower end connected to and adapted to be wound upon the drum 13 upon the movable half-clutch 10, all substantially as shown and described in my other application referred to.

Coming now to the present invention, the letter S designates a leaf-spring seated at its lower end below a clip 0 in the interior of the tube 14, and its body being bent outrod R is a cord or chain D, which passes downwardly through the bottom of the wagon-body and over a number of pulleys P to the proper point, whence it is led downwardly in rear of the transverse shaft 7 and connected to a cam M. It will be understood that the front axle 4 is provided with a pair of forwardlyprojecting bars, within which this transverse shaft 7 is journaled at its ends, and in this bar between the aXle and the shaft, 011 a horizontal longitudinal pin N, is pivoted the cam M, having a curved outer face m and an eye 0) at its upper corner, to which the cord D is connected. Y The drum 13 upon the halfclutch 10 has a fiangeF at its outer end, against which the face m of the cam bears, and from this construction it will be understood that when the rod R within the buggy is raised the cord D will be drawn upon, the cam M turned, and the movable half-clutch 1O thrown into engagement with the stationary half-clutch 9.

In operation this device is substantially the same as my other one referred to-that is to say, when it is desired to hitch the horse the reins are engaged between the clamps 16, which stand normally at the upper end of the tube 14, and the rod R is elevated. The latter motion engages the two half-clutches 9 and 10, and the driver may leave the horse with safety. If 110w the horse starts, the front wheel will rotate, and the gears will rotate the shaft 7, the two clutches, and the drum 13. This rotation of the drum will draw upon the strap 17, and the clamps 16 will be drawn down in the tube, whereby the reins will be pulled over the upper edge of the dashboard and the bit drawn tightly into the horses month, all as will be clearly understood. To

release the device, it is simply necessary to give a slight blow to the head H at the upper drum and leading to a pair of clamps, and a vertical tube on the inner side of the dash-- board, within which said clamps slide, of a cam independent of said strap for throwing said half-clutches into engagement with each other, all substantially as set forth.

2. In a rein-holder, the combination, with the wheel, gears, transverse shaft, stationary clutch, spring-operated movable clutch having a drum,clamps moving in a vertical tube on the inner side of the dash-board, and strap connecting the clamps and drum, of the cam M, bearing against the end of the drum, the cord D, connected with said cam and leading upwardly into the wagon-body, and the rod R, connected to the upper end of the cord, the whole adapted to operate substantially as described.

3. In a rein-holder, substantially as described, the movable half-clutch 10, having thedrum 13, in combination with the pivoted cam M, having a curved outer face m and an eye Q) at its upper end, and a cord D, con nected to said eye and led into the wagonbody, as and for the purpose set forth.

4. In a reinholder, substantially as described, the combination, with the drum l3, flange F, cam M, and cord D, of the pulleys P, secured to the bottom of the wagon-body and over which said cord is passed, the vertical and movable rod R within the wagonbody, connected at its lower end to said cord, and means for holding said rod in place, as set forth.

5. In a rein-holder, substantially as described, the combination, with the clamps 16 and the strap 17, connected to a half-clutch,-

of the vertical tube 14, secured to the inner side of the dash-board and opening at 18 through the bottom of the wagon, the clip 0 in the interior of the said tube, the leaf-spring S, whose lower end is seated in said clip, and whose body is bent outwardly and bears upon said clam ps,tongue-and-groove vertical guides upon the clamps and tube, respectively, a second half-clutch revolved by the wheels, and a cam for engaging said half-clutches, as and for the purpose set forth.
