SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 426,126, dated April 22, 1890.

Be it known that LTREvANNIoN A. J ONES, a citizen of the United States, residing atDublin, in the county of \Vashington and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements i 11 Vehicle Runnin g- Gears; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear,

and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which forms a part of this specification.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in running gears for vehicles, more particularly to the hound-coupling; and it has for its object to improve upon prior devices of this character, and to provide a simple, cheap, and efiieient device which can be readily applied to short-hound vehicles now in use.

It has been found from experience that it is necessary to have a little pressure of the tongue in the neck-yoke all the time. In my improvement the tongue has thislight weight on the neck-yoke, and the draft of the vehicle will carry the weight from the top of the necks of the animals. I provide a hinged tongue and place the whiffietree back of the hinge of the tongue, so that their weight is on the vehicle and not on the tongue.

Other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear, and the novel features thereof will be specifically defined by the appended claim.

The novelty resides in the peculiarities of construction and the combinations, arrangement, and adaptation of parts, all as more fully hereinafter described, shown in the drawing, and then particularly pointed out in the claim.

The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, forms apart of this specification, and in which is shown a top plan of my invention.

Referring to the details of the drawing by letter, A designates the axle, and B the ordinary short hounds, of a vehicle of any known construction, except as hereinafter specified. To the narrowest portions of the hounds I secure in any suitable manner, preferably, however, by means of transverse bolts, or transverse bolts or screw-threaded rods (1, which pass through the ends of the hounds, the divergent bars C, which 'fit within the hounds, as shown, and are connected near one end by means of the transverse connecting-bar I). These bars C converge until after they pass the ends of the hounds, and are then extended parallel with each other, as shown, being extended sufiiciently to leave a space 0 therebetween, in which the rear end of the tongue E works, and is pivoted by means of the transverse pivot d; or it maybe hinged thereto, if preferred.

1* is a longitudinal bar arranged between the parallel portions of the bars 0 at its forward end and secured thereto in any suitable manner, at its rear end being connected to the cross-bar b, as shown.

G is the whiffiet-ree, pivoted at c to the bar F to the rear of the pivot or hinge of the tongue. By this construction the weight of the whiffietree is carried by the hounds and not by the tongue.

The parts are simple, cheap of manufacture, and can be readily applied to vehicles now in use.

The tongue will at all times keep in its place in the neck-yoke, notwithstanding the jolting of the vehicle and the dropping of the wheels in ruts or the like.

\Vhat I claim as new is- The combination, with the hounds, of the bars (3, secured thereto, the cross-bar connecting the rear ends of said bars, the longitudinal bar F, the tongue pivoted between the forward ends of said bars 0, and a whiflietree pivoted to the longitudinal bar F to the rear of the pivot of the tongue, substantially as specified.
