DUPLIGATING CHECK BOOK.

N. PUERS. Mmm n w. \luhin UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DAVID NICE, OF WOOSTER, OHIO.
DU PLICATING CHECK-BOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 420,353, dated January 28, 1890.
Application filed April 15, 1889. $erial1l'o. 307,362. (No modeh) To all whom itmay concern.-
Be it known that I, DAVID NICE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wooster, in the county of Wayne and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful D u plicat-ing Check- Book, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to duplicating checkbooks for store clerks and salesmen, and particularly to check-books which have an attached carbon-sheet to accomplish the duplication upon the leaves thereof as they are successively used.
Heretofore it has been impossible to retain both the attached carbon-sheet and also the stub of the leaf after duplication within the check-book without rewriting by reason of such stubs interference with the use of the carbon-sheet upon the next succeeding leaf, the stubs in such case remaining between the carbon-sheet and the next succeeding stubs, there being no means of removing it out of the way of the carbon-sheet except by tearing the stub out of the check-book.
It is the object of my invention to provide for removing each stub after use from underneath the carbon-sheet, so as not to interfere with its use upon the next stub of the check-book, and yet retain such used stub securely bound in the check-book for ready reference. I accomplish this object by the device illustrated in the accompanyin g drawings, in which similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is an open view of my stub retaining and dupli eating check-book. Fig.2 is a detached stubleaf of the same. Fig. 3 is one of a series of additional leaves and an additional carbonsheet, which may be added, if desired, to i11- crease the number of copies at one writing, as hereinafter specified.
In the drawings, A is the cover of the checkbook, which may be made in any of the usual forms desired.
B are detachable leaves connected by perforated lines (1, to be torn out after written upon.
0 is a sheet of carbon-paper, such as here tofore used for like purpose.
The leaves B are removably attached to stubs D, which are secured and bound together in book form by means of a pin or pivot 19, which is firmly secured to the back or cover of the book. The carbon-sheet O is mounted upon and securely fastened to the opposite end of the pin, being strengthened at its base afor this purpose, thereby also securing it in line with the cover of the book. The stubs D, being thus secured and bound together by the pivot 19 through perforations P, are readily swung outwardly from under the'carbon-sheet O in the direction of the arrow B" until completely reversed, when the detachable sheet 13 may be torn away, leaving the duplicated stub securely attached within the book for reference, as aforesaid.
Itis apparent, if more than one detached copy is desired, such result maybe accomplished by the same device in a similar manner by binding a series of double leaves with an added carbon-sheet O to fold between them, Fig. 3, in reversed position upon the base a of carbon-sheet O. The stubs D, being pivoted under the carbon-sheet, receive in such case a triple copy, and are then drawn around out of the way of the carbonsheet, as aforesaid, and the other two copies made at the same writing may be separated and removed.
The use of sheets of carbon-paper in connect-ion with the leaves of the check-book to accomplish duplication is well known, and such I do not claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure is- 1. The duplicating and stub retaining check -book constructed substantially as shown and described-to wit, having attached carbon-sheet O and stub-leaves D, said stubleaves bound together by means of a pivot, to be swung out of the way ofv the carbonsheet after each duplication.
2. In a duplicating check-book, the 001m bination, with stationary carbon-sheets C of duplicating leaves B arranged to fold upon the carbon-sheets, and stubs D, bound together therewith by meansv of a pivot 0, whereby two removable copies may be made at one writing, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I hereunto set my hand, at Wooster, Ohio, this 27th day of February, 1889.
DAVID NICE.
