To all whom it mag concern.-

Be it known that I, ARVILL S. JORDAN, a

citizen of the United States of America, residing at WValtham, in the county of Hancock and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in \Vindow- Grates; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention has reference to windowgrates; and it consists in the improved construction hereinafter described and set forth, whereby a simple and efficient arrangement is provided that will satisfactorily serve the purposes of a screen or guard, particularly for cellar-windows, and present a construction wherein the screen or grating can be securely retained in place by means of a key, and will be readily removable from the inside.

In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a view from the inside of the device. Fig. Bis a horizontal plan taken in the plane of the securing-key, and Fig. 3 is a vertical section.

The rectangularframe A of the device may be made of any material and size to suit the requirements, and has interiorly vertical parallel strips a b, forming intermediate spaces between the same. Upper and lower transverse strips 0 intersect the vertical'strips b.

A metallic grate or screen section B consists of the frame portion and segregated bars, and is of such dimension that it can be introduced to have its ends bear in the spaces and lower horizontal portions bear against the corresponding strips 0. I claim 1. The combination, with the frame prostrips a b, of a grate or screen section between said strips, and adapted to be moved laterally within the frame to disengage one of its ends, and a key inserted through one of the outer screen section, bearing across its end face and rigidly holding the same for preventing such lateral movement and withdrawal, substantially as set forth.
