SUPPORTING-BRACKET.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 11, 1915.
Application filed December 30, 1914. Serial No. 879,745.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES H. Gianna- WOOD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Slatington, in the county of Lehigh and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Supporting-Brackets, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in supporting brackets and more particularly to a device of this character which is especially adapted for use in supporting window shades, the main object of the present invention being the provision of a window shade supporting bracket, which can be readily adjusted to accommodate various widths of shades and can also beadjusted whereby to raise and lower the shade supporting members with respect to the window casing.
Another object of the present invention is the provision of a device of the above character which will possess advantages in points of efiiciency and durability, is inexpensive to manufacture and, at the same time, is simple in construction and operation.
lVith the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the specification and claims.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application, Figure 1 is a top plan view of a supporting member constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective View of one end of the same, illustrating the bracket about to be arranged in position. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view, the bracket being shown in position. Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view, the bracket and clamping member being removed; and Fig. 6 is a transverse sectional view illustrating the bracket in a lower adjusted position.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, it will be noted in Fig. 1, that I have provided a supporting member which consists of two movable bars, generally indicated by the numerals 1 and 2, said bars being provided at their inner ends with U- shaped loops 3, adapted to slidably receive the bars 1 and 2, the loop 3, at the end of one of the bars, slidably receiving the opposite bar. Carried by the outer ends of each of the bars 1 and 2, are the blocks 4: having longitudinal grooves 5 therein whereby to receive the ends of the bars 1 and 2 which are secured in position in any suitable manner. Secured to the blocks 4 upon the outer faces thereof, are the U-shaped keepers 6, the ends of which extend down on to the opposite sides of the blocks 4 and are securely held in position by screws, as shown at 7. It is preferred to have the medial portions of the keepers 6 slightly spaced from the blocks 4, as indicated in Fig. 5, so that the bracket and clamping member can be readily inserted beneath the same.
The brackets which support the shade rollers are generally indicated by thenumeral 8 and in order to securely clamp these brackets in position, the flanged portion 9 at the inner end of the bracket is first arranged between the'medial portion of the keeper 6 and the blocks 4, and the clamping plate 10 is then inserted between oneof the blocks and the flange 9 which will afford sufiicient clamping action to securely retain the bracket in place. It will be noted that the plate 10 is provided with an out-turned edge or flange 11 which will readily facilitate the inserting of the plate 10 or the withdrawal of the same.
From the above description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it will be readily apparent that in placing this device in position for use, the bars 1 and 2 are first adjusted to the width of the window and then secured in position in any desirable manner at the top of the window. The flanges 9 of the brackets 8 are then positioned between the blocks 4 and the keepers 6 and the clamping plates 10 inserted to securely retain the brackets in position. It will be noted that the clampingplates 10 are provided at one end thereof with a transverse rib 12 which will engage with the inner edge of the keeper 6, after the plate 10 has been arranged in position to assist in retaining this clamping plate 10 in position. It will be noted, however, that sufficient clamping action will be had between the plate 10 and the block 5, as to retain this plate and the brackets 8 in their effective position, as shown in Fig. 1.
My improved supporting member, as herein shown and described, is extremely simple in construction and can be manufactured and placed upon the market at a comparatively low cost.
It will be noted from the showing given in Figs. 4 and 6, that the brackets 8 can be adjusted up or down with respect to the blocks 4: and will be securely held in any adjusted position. that by having the upstanding flange 11 formed on the plate 10, it will bear against the outer side of the bracket 8 and assist in retaining the bracket in its eflective position. It will be noted that the wedging action provided for between the plates 10 and the flange 9 will securely retain the brackets 8 against any outward movement.
The bars 1 and 2 are secured to the window casing by means of suitable screws 4 which are adapted to be passed through suitable openings 5 formed within the bars 1 and 2, adjacent the outer ends thereof. From this it will be apparent that after the bars have been adjusted to the size of the window, they are rigidly retained in place by means of-the screws 4.
While I have shown and described the preferred form of my invention, it will be obvious that various changes in the details of construction and in the proportions may be resorted to for successfully carrying my invention into practice, without sacrificing any of the novel features or departing from the scope of the invention, as defined by the appended claims.
Having thus described this invention, what I desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent, is I 1. A supporting element including relatively adjustable bars, blocks carried by the outer ends of said bars, U-shaped keepers arranged over the blocks and having their ends secured to the sides thereof, brackets having outstanding flanges formed thereon and adapted to be arranged between the medial portion of each U-shaped keeper and th block, and a removable retaining plate It will also be noted adapted to be disposed between the flange of the bracket and the block, whereby to clamp said bracket in position.
2. A supporting element including relatively adjustable bars, blocks each having a groove formed in one face thereof adapted to receive the outer end of each of the movable bars, U-shaped keepers arranged over the blocks and having their ends secured to the sides thereof, brackets provided with flanges adapted to be disposed between the intermediate portions of the keepers and the blocks, retaining plates disposed between the flanges of the brackets and the blocks, and a rib formed in each of the retaining plates at the inner edge thereof for engagement with the edge of the U-shaped keepers, as and for the purpose set forth.
3. A supporting element including relatively movable bars, blocks carried by the outer ends thereof, keepers carried by said blocks, brackets having inwardly extending flanges formed thereon, and adapted to be removably arranged between the keepers and the blocks, retaining plates removably arranged between the blocks and the flanges on the brackets, outstanding flanges formed on the retaining plates, and ribs carried by the retaining plates for engagement with one edge of the keepers.
4. A curtain support comprising a transversely extending member, keeper plates at the ends of the member, each attached at its upper and lower ends to the member and spaced from the face thereof to receive the base flange of a shade bracket, and clamping plates each insertible between the corresponding keeper and the base flange of the bracket and locking the bracket in place.
