J. J. BRYANT. DRAFT EQUALIZER.
No. 416,322. Patented Dec. 3,1889! ugraphur. Washington, u. c,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JEFFERSON J. BRYANT, OF IOIVA FALLS, IOIVA.
DRAFT-EQUALIZER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 416,322, dated December 3, 1889.
Application filed September 12 1889. Serial No. 323,700. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JEFFERSON J. BRYANT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Iowa Falls, in the county of Harding and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Draft-Equalizers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art'to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in draft-equalizers; and it consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, hereinafter described and claimed.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple and strong evener for four horses which will be applicable to all kinds of tongued vehicles. I attain this object by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein my device is shown in perspective.
In thedrawing, A represents a tongue for a vehicle.
B is a laterally-extending arm pivoted to the under side of the tongue and extending out for a considerable distance. On the outer end of this arm B is pivoted a whiffietree O, which has two sin glet-rees c thereon. To assist in retaining the arm in its horizontal position, I secure a curved brace F loosely on the top of the tongue and extend it out and attach it to the arm. Over this brace F is placed a curved supporting-plate E, its outer end being pivoted on the arm B and its upper end being carried up over the brace F and bent horizontally to support the whiffletree D, which has the two singletrees (Z attached thereto.
I-I represents a swinging bracket formed with an under portion I, between which is j ournaled on a suitable vertical shaft a grooved pulley J. This bracket extends back obliquely and has a regulating and stifiening brace G pivoted to its end, which has a series of perforations 9 through its end, through which a pin is adapted to be inserted for regulating the angle of the bracket.
K is a cord or tug attached to the centers of the respective whiflietrees and passing over the pulley J. By this construction it will beseen that the draft of four horses can beregulated and equalized at will with but little trouble.
I am aware that it is not new to form a draft-equalizer for four horses with a lateral arm and brace, and this I do not broadly claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a draft-equalizer, the combination, with the tongue, of the arm B, the swinging plate E, the whiffletrees O and D, the bracket H, having pulley J in its end, the adjustingbrace G, and the cord K, substantially as described.
2. In a draft-equalizer, the combination, with the tongue, of the arm B, the brace F, the pivoted plate E, the whiffletrees D and O, the adjustable bracket H, the pulley in the end of the same, the perforated brace G, and the cord K, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JEFFERSON J. BRYANT.
