LATCH AND LOCK CASE.

f y q A I /0 9G) i 40 a 6 i l UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AUGUST ARENS, OF NEV BRITAIN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO P. & F. CORBIN, OF SAME PLACE.
LATCH AND LOCK CASE.V
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 416,248, dated December 3, 1889.
Application filed October 3, 1889. Serial No. 325,929. (No model.)
T0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUST ARENS, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Britain, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Latch and Lock Cases, of which the following is a specication.
My invention relates to improvements in latch and lock cases; andthe object of my improvement is to provide simple and inexpensive means for attaching the face-plate to the body of the case.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a front elevation of my latch and lock case. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, looking` on the inner edge. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the inner side of the face-plate as made ready to be attached to Ithe body of the case. Fig. 4 is a vertical section of a portion of my case on the line .fr a: of Fig. 2, and Fig. 5 is a plan View of one of the blanks for the fastening-lugs.
A designates the body of the case, which may be of any ordinary construction and provided at its front upper and lower corners with shouldered projections 6'.
B designates the face-plate, of any ordinary form and provided near each end with rectangular mortises 7, Fig. 4., the distance between which mortises is about equal to the ver- -tical height of the case, including the shouldered projections '6.
I secure within these inortises the tenonsS of the lugs i), the blank for one of said lugs being shown in Fig. 5.
Each lu g is provided with side wings l0, which Wings are bent at right angles to the body of the lug to embrace the front and rear sides of the shouldered projections 6. I prefer to bend these win gs before the lugs are secured to the face-plate and attach the lugs to the faceplate before their body is clenched or bent, thus making the face-plate and lugs in the formshown in Fig 3. With the face-plate and lugs thus prepared, the body of the case is placed against the inner side of the face-plate and the central portion or body of the lugs bent or clinched down over the back side of the shouldered projections G, as shown in Figs. l, 2, and 4, thereby firmly securing the face-plate to the body of the case.
Vhile I have illustrated myimprovement as applied to a combined latch and lock case, it is evident that the same may be applied to a lock-case or a latch-case when they are constructed separately.
I claim as my invention- The combination, with the body of the case having shouldered projections 6, of the sheetmet-al face-plate B, and the lugs 9 secured thereto, said lugs having the body portion and side wings 10, substantially as described, and for the purpose specied.
AUGUST AEENs.
