CASING FOR LOCKS.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, EDGAR W. BASSICK and CHARLES S. BARNARD, both citizens of the United States, residing in the city of Bridgeport, county of Fairfield, and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Casings for Locks; and We do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Our invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in casings for looks, and has for its object to provide a device of this description in which the entire structure comprising the sides, the edge portions, the face plate, and the key post, shall all be made from a single piece of sheet metal bent and formed into the proper shape.
With this end in view our invention consists in the details of construction hereinafter fully described and then particularly pointed out in the claim which concludes this description.

Referring to Fig. l, 1 represents the blank which is cut from sheet metal into the proper form, which blank likewise comprises the face plate 2 having slot 3 for the bolt, the key hole 4 and the key post 5, the latter being lanced out of the stock of the blank and bent upward at right angles. This blank is bent into the proper shape to form the lock casing a, the face plate 2 being bent at right angles to close one end thereof, and this bending operation will cause the key hole 1 to properly aline with the key post 5, as shown at Fig. 2.
Our improved casing may be utilized in connection with any suitable interior looking mechanism, but we prefer to use a very simple structure in this respect, and we will therefore refer briefly to such preferred structure.
6 is the bolt which we prefer to make in skeleton form and this bolt comprises a nose or locking portion 7 which extends within the slot 3 in the face plate, and rearwardly extending legs 8, 9, the latter bearing against the inner wall of the casing at one edge portion while the leg 8 is bent to form spaced inwardly projecting portions 10, 11, against which the key operates to project or retract the bolt. The rear extremity of the leg 8 engages a teat 12 which is indented from the casing, so that the bolt cannot be accidentally displaced in its locked and unlocked positions.
Referring to Fig. 8, the bolt is shown retracted with the position of the key after operating against the rear projection 11 noted in dotted lines, while at Fig. 1 the bolt is shown projected with the position of the key after it has operated against the forward projection likewise noted in dotted lines. The legs 8, 9, bear against the walls of the casing with a spring action so that the bolt is held steady at all times during its operation.
Having thus described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is In a look, a casing comprising side and edge portions and a face plate and key post all made from a single piece of sheet metal bent and formed into proper shape.
