SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 408,994, dated August 13, 1889.

To all whom iv' may concern:
Be it known that we, CHARLES \V. STAM- BAUGH and VALENTINE L. NEY, citizens of the United States, residing at Canton, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wheelbarrows; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, in which-- Figure 1 is an isometrical view. Fig. 2 is a side View showing the Wheel located at the front end of the barrow. Fig. 3 is a side view showing the wheel located under the box. Fig. 4 is a View of the sheet properly cut to form a box. Fig. 5 is a top view of the front or forward end of one of the bars, showing the plate properly located thereon. Fig. 6 is a sectional View of the front or forward portion of one of the bars, showing the different parts belonging thereto properly attached. Figs. 7 are detached views of one of thesockets and its retaining-bar. Fig. 8 is a detached view of one of the pins. designed and calculated to lock the wheel.
The present invention has relation to wheelbarrows; and it consists in the different parts and combination of parts hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the draw- 1ngs.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the side bars and handles, which are constructed in the ordinary manner, reference being had to properly attaching thedifferent parts thereto. These bars and handles are held in the desired position by means of the usual cross-bars and braces. The legs B are located substantially as illustrated, and are properly attached and braced to the bars and handles A. To the front or forward ends of the bars A are securely attached the front ends of the inclined and curved bars C. The opposite ends of these inclined and curved bars C are securely attached to the block or arm D. The front or forward ends of the inclined bars 0 are bent or curved, as illuswheel E in the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and thereby forming an ordinary or common wheelbarrow, the pins 1) are provided, and are so adjusted in the bars A that when they are pressed or forced down ward they will pass directly back of the axle a. For the purpose of securely holding the pins 1) in the position shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the feather or extension c is provided, which passes through the slot (Z inthe plate d when said pin is turned partially around, thereby se; curely locking the pin in the position shown in Figs. 2 and 3. For the purpose of preventing the pins 11 from becoming detached, the rib c is provided. In use the head of the pin 1) is passedthrough the rounded portion of the slot (1 in the plate (1, after which said plate is securely attached, as illustrated in the drawings.
WVhen it is desired to permanently hold the wheel E in the position shown in Fig. 3, the disk or plate F is rotated on the pin or rivet 6, thereby bringing the retaining bar or pin f directly in front of the axle a, and extending the end of the retaining-bar f through the aperture 9. It will be seen that by this peculiar arrangement the wheel E can be permanently held in either of the positions shown in Figs. 2 and 3.
WVhen it is desired to have the wheel E act as a roller in passing from one end of the inclined bars C to the opposite ends, the pins 7) are elevated until the axle a is freed, and the pins placed in the position shown in Fig. 3. The plate F is rotated backward, thereby throwing the retaining-bar f back out of the way of the axle a.
It will be seen by our peculiar arrangement that when the wheelbarrow proper is loaded and pushed forward, the wheel E will strike or bear against the bottom or under side of the box G and act as a roller until the wheel. reaches the rear sockets, at which time the wheel E is freed from the box G and is free to rotate at a given or fixed point upon its axle a. \Vhen the wheel E again reaches the front or forward ends of the inclined and curved bars 0, the axle a stops and rotates against the pin 1). It will be seen that by providing the wheel E and adjusting the same so as to act as a roller until it has assumed a position substantially directly under the load, the weight of the load is removed to a great extent from the arms of the operator, thereby providing a wheelbarrow which is easily operated and capable of conveying very heavy loads with case. It will also be seen that the wheelbarrow can be easily dumped of its load, as the wheel is in position to receive the greater amount of the weight. In case it is desired to use the wheelbarrow in the ordinary form, the wheel E can be easily placed in the position shown in Fig. 1.

Having fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-, 1
1. In a wheelbarrow, the wheel E, adapted to move under and receive the weight of the load independent of its axle, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of the bars or handles A, the inclined curved bars 0, bent to hold the axle a at either end of said bars, and the wheel E, substantiallyas and for the purpose set forth.
The combination of the wheel E and its axle a, the inclined bars 0, and means for locking the wheel E at either end of the inclined bars 0, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4. The combination of the plate or disk F,
provided with the lugs h, the retaining-bar j" and the inclined bars C, and the wheel E, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
5. The combination of the bars or handles A, the pins 1), provided with the feathers c and the ribs 0', the inclined bars (I, and the wheel E, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
6. The combination of the inclined bars 0 and means for locking the wheel E at either end of the inclined bars C, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
