SIDE-HILL PLOW.

Be it known that I,WILLIAM A. COWLEY, of the village of- Stamford. in .the county of Delaware and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Side- Hill or Reversible Plows, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawin gs.

The object of my invention is to provide a means by which the double reversible moldboard of the ordinary side-hill or reversible plow now in common use may be readily and easily detached from its supporting framework, standard, or beam, then reversed and readily, easily, and automatically secured by the reversed edge of the same mold-board to the opposite side ofthe same standard orbeam.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is intended to represent a general or perspective view of the mold-board and beam of the ordinary side-hill plow with the improvement herein specified attached, the beam B and standard, as is usually the case in plows of this description, when made of iron, being constructed in one piece. Fig. 2 represents, in detail, more fully this particular improvementor invention.

In my invention, 0 represents a double-ended lever, in the center of which is a round hole, through which passes a bolt or a short stud, I), upon which the lever may vibrate laterally, and connecting it either to the handles of the plow (which it has not been deemed necessary to show in the drawings) or to the rear end of the beam B, as shown in Fig. 1'. At the extremities of this lever are hooks a, which are made to engage at either end with catches 61 upon the mold-board, thus, when engaged, rigidly holding the mold-board against the standard, whether upon its right or upon its left side. Around the hole in the center of the lever O is a square or slightly lozenge-shaped hub, c, with one projecting corner at the rear acute angle, forming a stop, f. are two plain flat springs, g, bolted, riveted, or otherwise fastened at their forward ends to and upon opposite sides of the beam or standard B. V

In reversing the plow the operator presses with his foot the disengaged end of the lever C, thus liberating the engaged hook at upon its opposite end from the catch d upon the moldboard, and at the same time impelling the lever with snfficient force to cause two of the corners of the square hub e to pass the central point of contact with the two springs g. The closing again of the two springs g will continue the movement of the lever until the end ofone ot' the springs is brought in contact with the stop f upon the hub 6, when the hook at upon the opposite end of the leverG will be in proper position to engage with its corresponding catch d upon the reversed edge of the mold-board. The two springs 9 also firmly hold either of the hooks a and corresponding catches d in engagement until liberated, as above described.

It will be evident that the lever G and the springs 9 may be placed eitherover or under or through the handles of the plow, as may be inost desirable or convenient, and pins or other projections upon the lever may be used, instead of the hub c, and not change the na ure of the invention.

I do not claim as my invention an. ordinary double-ended and hooked lever, nor the correspoudin g catches upon the mold-board, as these have been heretofore in use but I do claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The double-ended and hooked lever 0,-havin g a square hub, e, and stop f, in combination with the springs 9 upon the beam of the plow, and the reversible mold-board A, having lugs d, substantially as shown and described.
