UNITED STATES PATENT @FFICE.
ALONZO F. SMITH, OF MILNVAUKEE, VISCONSIN.
SPELLlNG-STICK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 407,374, dated July 23, 1889.
Application filed March 12, 1889.
T0 ctZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALONZO F. SMITH, of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Visconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spelling- Sticks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The main object of my invention is to instruct and amuse.
It consists, essentially, of a number of interchangeable sections capable of being joined together and arranged so as to spell words, produce a variety of geometrical designs, &c.
In the accompanying drawings, like letters designate the same parts in the several figures.
Figure l is a side elevation of the device, showing the sections at the left arranged to form symmetrical figures and the sections at the right arranged to spell a simple word. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of one of the sections, and Fig. 3 is a medial longitudinal section of the complete device, showing the method of joining the sections.
A A represent the sections of which the stick is composed. They are preferably made cylindrical or annular in form, but may be polygonal, and are provided on their faces with letters, characters, simple geometrical figures, or designs, which may be of one or more colors.
The outer faces of the sections A A, as shown in the drawings, are divided circumferentially into squares, a plain square alternating with a lettered square. Each section is formed at one end with a reduced annular or cylindrical rim a, as shown in Fig. 2, and at the other end with a corresponding annular or cylindrical recess, as shown in Fig. 3, by means of which the several or any number of sections are joined together in a continuous cylinder, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3.
B 1-3 are buttons or end section s, one formed with a cylindrical projection b and the other with a corresponding recess 1), like those at Serial No. 303,037. (No model.)
opposite ends of the sections A, to close the open ends of the cylinder and to give ita finished appearance. lVhen it is made hollow, as shown, and provided with the ends B B, which serve as covers, the cylinder constitutes a convenient case for pens, pencils, and the like.
I prefer to make the device of wood, although other materials may be employed; and the letters, figures, designs, &c., may be applied directly to the surface of the sections A A or printed on paper to be afterward attached thereto.
By simply turning one or more of the sections with reference to the others or by interchanging them, or by both turning and interchanging them, the letters maybe arranged to spell any word, and a great variety of figures or designs may be produced by variously grouping or arranging the simple geometrical figures on the several sections, thereby furnishing an instructive as well as a pleasant diversion for children or even for older persons.
The device is susceptible of various modifications in its details without departing from the spirit of my invention.
1 claim- 1. A jointed spelling-stick composed of a number of separable interchangeable figured sections, each formed at one end with an annular flange and at the opposite end with a corresponding recess and capable of turning upon the adjoining section or sections, each section being wholly supported by and supporting the adjoining section or sections, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. A jointed cylindrical spelling-stick composed of a number of separable interchangeable annular figured sections, each formed at one end with a reduced annular flange and at the other end with a corresponding recess, whereby said sections maybe joined together in any order and each section may be turned upon the adjoining section or sections, and of closed end sections, one formed with a reduced cylindrical portion and the other with a corresponding recess, each section supporting and supported by the adjoining section or sections, substantially as and for the purpose s set forth.
3. A jointed spelling-stick eomposed of 1 In testimony that; I claim the foregoing :is separable intereha ngenble sections, each promy own I nflix my signature in presence of VlLlOd on its outer face with letters, figures, or two witnesses. the like, and formed at One end with it red neeil 5 cylindrical :rim and at the other with 2x eorre- ALONZU I". spending recess, whereby any number of said sections may be joined together, each snp- Witnesses: porting and supported by the adjoining seeins. L. (loss, tien or sections, substantially as and for the JOHN B. PIHL'LILPs.
