SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 407,097, dated July 16, 1889. Application filed February 25, 1889- Serial No. 301,595. (No model.)

Be it known that I, EDWARD MARTYN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of \Vayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Slitting the Ends of Cigar-Bunches; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exactdescription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form apart of this specification.

This invention relates to the manufacture of cigars, the object being to provide means whereby the tip end of the cigarbunch (before said hunch is supplied with the finishing-wrapper) may be slit or cut through longitudinally, producing, when finished, a free and easy smoking cigar.

In the common practice of making cigars, the tip or month end of the cigar-bunch becomes too firmly pressed or wrapped, resulting in a hard drawing or smoking cigar. To overcome this difficulty is the object of my invention, which I accomplish by the device hereinafter described, the essential features of which will be pointed out particularly in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of the specification, Figure l is a perspective of my improved device, the corner of the table being broken away to show arrangements of parts. Fig. 2 is a rear view in elevation of Fig. 1.. Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view 011 dotted line it a; of Fig. 1. Fig. & is a top plan. Figs. 5, (3, and 7 are details to be referred to. Fig.8 represents the cigarbunch with the slit cut through its end.

As indicated in the drawings, A represents the table supported by legs 1 l; B K, the upright frame; G the cross-head carrying the knives O O; V V, the guide-rods; C, the cigarmold; I), the cigar-bunch therein, and L L, the duplex foot-lever.

The table A maybe supported on any suitable frame-work. On said table the upright frame 13 K is placed near the rear edge of said table. The guide-rods V V pass up through the table through the ends of the cross-head G, the upper ends of said rods being secured in the cross-piece B of the upright frame by the nuts 0 0, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The guide-rods pass loosely through the ends of the cross-head G, permitting the cross-head to slide up and down on said rod s, for purposes hereinafter described.

The cross-head G is provided with a series of knives O 0, set in the slots S, passing vertically through said cross-head. The knives O O are provided with the broad base h and the shank Y, having the square portion (1. (See Fig. '7 Said knives are secured in the cross-head by passing the screw-threaded ends of the shanks Y up through the slots S in said cross-head and securing them on top by means of the washers Z and nuts c. (See Figs. 1, 2, and 5.) The slots S are of such shape that the square portions (Z of the shanks Y of the knives will fit snugly therein transversely, but which will allow of their free adjustment laterally. (See Figs. 5 and (3.)

The arched spring-ar1ns 'n a are bolted to the top of the cross-head G (see Figs. 1 and 2) and their outer ends secured to the crosspiece R, (see Figs. 1 and 3,) and said crosspiece is notched out to receive the partitions between the cells of the cigar-mold, forming the extended blocks 3 3, which are shaped on their under face to fit over the ends of the cigar-bunches. (See Fig. 1.)

The ends of the actuating angle-rod P pass up through the table A, and are attached at 2 2 to the staple-fastening in the under face of the cross-head G. (See Fig. 2.) The down ward-extending loop of said rod P is connected with the rear end of the foot-lever L by means of the link i and screw-eye 6, (see Figs. 1, 2, and 3,) whereby the cross-head G may be drawn down by the action of the footlever to the position shown in Fig. 3.

The coiled springs WV 1V,which environ the guide-rods V V between the outer ends of the cross-head G and the face of the table A, raise the cross-head from the position shown in Fig. 3 (when the foot-lever is released) to the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2.

By the construction of the duplex foot-lever consisting of the parts L L, supported near their longitudinal center by the fulcrum-rods F F, secured in the side rails T T, the inner ends of said parts L L Overlapping and fitting one in the other, a double leverage force and a straight-downward pull is exerted on the actuating angle-rod.

The several parts having been described in detail the operation of the device is as follows: To cut the slit in the end of cigarbunches, said bunches are taken when dry, (and yet in the mold,) the upper half of the mold is removed, and the lower half of the mold 0, containing the cigar-bunches D in the cells thereof, is placed on the table A, the side and end of the mold against the faces a a of the gages H H, respectively, (see Fig. 4,) the small or tip end of the cigar-bunch being immediately under the knives O O in the cross-head G. (See Fig. 1.) When in this position (by the foot of the operator) the outer end of the lever L is forced down, which, operating the part L, draws down on the actuating-rod P, said rod being attached to the crosshead G, whereby said cross-head is drawn down, forcing the knives O 0 through the ends of the cigar-bunches, (see Fig.3,) cutting the slit 5. (See Fig. 8.) The springarms n n being bolted to the cross-head G and attached at their outer and downward extending ends to the cross-piece R, as the cross-head passes down in the act of cutting the cigar-bunch the cross-piece R is carried down, the extended blocks 3 3 of which, by the action of the spring-arms n n, are forced down onto the outer ends of the cigar-bunches D, (see Fig. 3,) whereby said bunches are firmly held while being cut. WVhen the foot of the operator is removed from the lever, the coiled springs W WV will raise the crosshead to the position shown in Fig. 1, when the mold O, with the cut bunches therein, may be removed.

The gages H H, by means of the screws 3 s and slots 0 c, are adjustable, which permits of the use of any size or shape of mold.

The manner of securing the knives in the cross-head allows of their ready removal for sharpening or other purposes, and their feature of lateral adjustment adapts them for use where the molds vary in the width of the partition between the cells. Said lateral adjustment is accomplished by loosening the nut e at the top of the cross-head, when the shank Y of the knife may be readily adjusted laterally, as clearly shown in Fig. 5.

Having thus fully set forth my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A device for slitting the end of cigarbunches, consisting of a table to which is secured an upright frame, said frame supporting the vertical guide-rods V V, the cross-head G, arranged upon the rods and adapted to slide up and down, and having elongated slots S, the knives located in the slots in said crosshead, and means for adjusting them laterally therein, the coiled springs V W, and the actuating angle-rod P, having its ends secured to the under face of the cross-head G and being connected with the foot-lever L L, substantially as and for the purposes specified.

2. In a device for slitting the end of cigarbunches, the combination of the table A, upright frame 13 K, guide-rods V V, and coiled springs WV W, with thecross-head G, having the slots S, carrying the knives O O, the arched spring-arms n n, bolted to said cross-head and attached at their outer ends to the cross-piece R, the rod P, having its ends secured to the under face of the cross-head G, the link t, connecting the downward-extending loop of the rod P with the inner end of the part L of the foot-lever, the duplex foot-lever consisting of the parts L L, mounted on the fulcrum-rods F F, substantially as and for the purposes specified. I

3. The combination of the legs, table, gages H H, the upright frame, guide-rods V V, springs W W, cross-head G, having slots S S, carrying knives O O, the spring-arms 'n n, cross-piece R, having blocks 3 3, the mold 0, rod P, link If, the duplex lever, and rods F F, arranged and operating as and for the purposes specified.
