UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JACO B BRANDT, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
MACHINE FOR CUTTING OUT CIGAR-WRAPPEIRS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 277,452, dated May" 15, 1883.
Application filed August 31, 1882. (N0 model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known'that I, JAooB BRANDT, of the city and county of San Francisco, in the State of California, have made and invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Cutting Out Cigar-Wrappers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to an improved machine for cutting out a number of wrapperblanks at a single operation from a pile of material.
The object sought to be attained by my improvement is to provide a machine capable of cutting out wrapper-blanks of any given form in greater orless quantity, with a clean-cut or smooth edge, and having the capacity to work for a long time without clogging. These objects I attain in the following manner by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a side elevation of myimproved machine, the bed-plate and cutting-slab being in section. Fig. 2 is a transverse section taken through the cutter, the plunger, and the slab. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the cutter, and
Fig. 4 a View of the plunger that works within the cutter.
An upright post or standard, A, secured to a suitable bed or table, A, has bearings 11 b for a vertically-moving bar or rod, B. This bar carries the cutter-block C on its lower end, and at the upper end is connected to a hand-lever, D, by which a downward movement of the bar and pressure upon the cutter is produced.
The fulcrum d of this lever is placed in a formed of two bars, the lower ends of which are pivoted at f to the back of the standard at the lower end. This permits the fulcrum-point d to move outwardly as the lever is broughtdown into the horizontal position. The upward movement of the bar to retract the cutter is produced by a spiral spring, 9. The cutter-head fixed to the end of this bar B is of peculiar construction. It consists of a cutting-edge, h, formed of acontinuous blade of the outline of the wrapper to be produced, and secured to a block so as to be removable when required to be changed. In the space within this cuttingedge is a plunger meet in its rise.
or presser plate, I, having a shape to conform to the space inclosed by the cutting-edge and held in position by rods or pins j, that project upward and through the top of the block C. The block 0 is provided with openingscto allow the air to escape freely as the plunger is forced upward, so that the spiral springs shall be the only resistance which the plunger shall These are readily adjusted in their force, as the plunger is set higher or lower by the nuts on the rods j. The object of this plate I is to force out the blanks from within the cutter as soon as the cutting oper ation is completed and the block C is raised from the cutting-slab. The plunger also serves to cleanse and moisten the cutter, for which purpose its edges are covered with some suitable suhstance or material capable of receiving and holding water, such as a sponge or a piece of felt. For this purpose it is made of two plates, it, between which the moistening material is firmly clamped, and the top plate is perforated with a number of holes, and the top of the cutter-head provided with an opening, through which water is supplied to the plate. A similar moistening device can be applied on the outside of the cutting-blade, if required, so that the two surfaces of the die can be kept from gum ming or becoming clogged.
It is also of advantage to keep the faces of the putter moistened during the operation of the machine, in order to produce a clean, smooth edge on the wrapper-blank. The saine can be obtained, however, by using the inside moistener alone, as it is not essential to prevent the material outside of the line of out from chipping or breaking.
The outside moistener, Kpmay be formed of a frame fastened at the side to the table and having its interior edges or surfaces covered with the moistening substance.
The cutting board or slab L is movable in and out and has a guide-plate, m, which serves as a guide to lay the edge of the leaves againstwhen placing them in a pile or layer upon the board.
This machine can be made to cut a large number or a pile of leaves at a single opera tion and to turn out blanks with smooth-cut edges in'a rapid and effective manner.
and cleansing Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a cigar-blank cutter, the combination of the rod B and cutter h and block G,'pr0- vided with the air-holes c, of the plunger I,
having the adjustable supports and springbearing, and of the lever D and sw'inging yoke F, substantially as herein set forth.
2. The. combination, with the reciprocating cutter G, of the plunger I, having the moistening substance at and around the edges, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
