UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HARRY A. R. DIETRICH, OF SOUTH BETHLEHEM, PENNSYLVANIA.
STEAM-BOILER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 395,268, dated December 25, 1888.
application filed March 20,1888.
To all whom, it may concern;-
Be it known that I, HARRY A. R. DIETRICH, a citizen of the United States, residing at South Bethlehem, in the county of Northampton and State of Pennsylvania, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Steam-Boilers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to aboiler primarily intended for generating and super-heating steam employed in circulating-pipes for heat ing purposes.
My invention consists in certain details of construction, which will first be fully described with reference to the accompanying drawings, and subsequently pointed out in the claims.
In the said drawings, Figure 1 is-a front elevation, partly in section, of a furnace and boiler constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a section of a furnace, showing arrangement of tubes, &c., in side elevation. Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of the same, partly in section. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the fire-chamber. Fig. 5 is a rear elevation of the water-front of the fire-chamber.
In the drawings I have shown the boiler in position on a furnace, of which 1 is the ashpit and 2 the fire-chamber. The walls of the furnace may be extended up around the boiler, and may be of any desired thickness.- The boiler proper or main water-space consists of tubes 3, connected by elbows 4, so as to form a single section. This section may be of any'height or width desired, the number and size of the tubes being altered according to circumstances. At its rear end this section rests upon the brick-work of the furnace, while its front end rests on a hollow casting, 5, which forms a water-front for the fire-chamber of the furnace. The lower tubes of the Water-sections 3 are directly connected to the rear of the water-front 5. In the cen ter of the water-front an aperture, 6, is provided for firing, the chute connected with such aperture being closed by a fire-door, 7. From the rear edges of the water-front run the Serial No. 267,843. (No model.)
ceives at bottom the water-inlet pipe 10. By this arrangement equal distribution of press ure and constant flow of water in the pipes are insured.
11 .is a floor or partition which forms the top of the fire-chamber and the floor of the super11eating-chamber 13, which partition deflects the products of combustion into the flue 12, whence they pass to the su jrerheating chamber 13, and so to the flue lileading to the stack. The upper tubes of section 3 are connected with vertical tubes 15 in the flue 12, and so to a common equalizing-chamber, 16. This chamber 16 serves not only to equalize the pressure of steam in the various tubes, but serves as a steam-dome. From. the upper portions of this steam-chamber run the horizontal superheating-tubes 17, which conduct the steam down through the superheatingchamber 13 and deliver it into the reservoir or equalizing-chaniber 18, situated at the hot test point in the furnace in the direct passage of the products of comb ustion, where the steam is finally superheated prior to its passage to the steam main 19. By the arrangement shown the steam to be superheated is taken from the cooler portion of the furnace and led downward till immediately preceding its discharge it reaches the hottest part of the furnace, the heat being in this manner utilized to the fullest extent in superheating.
20 is a pipe for discharging Water which by any accident may have flooded the superheating-coil.
Having thus described my invention, the following is What I claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In a steam-generator, the combination, with the furnace having a lire-chamber, a superheating chamber, and a flue connecting said chambers, of the water-front, the tubular water-section, the tubular water-leg surrounding the firechamber, connected to said waterfront and water-scction, a series of tubes in said superbeating-chamber arranged in layers, and the layer farthest from the fire-chamber being connected with the water-section, and the equalizer '18, situated in the passage between said fire-chamber and said flue, and connected to the layer of said pipes nearest the firechan1bcr, as set forth.
2. In a steam-generator, the combination,
with the furnace having a fire-chamber, of a wither-heating chamber, a flue connecting said fire-chamber and superheating-chamber, the tubular water-section supported in the upper part of said fire-chahnbeig-the waterfront 5, having the fire-door, the Water-leg composed of tubes surrounding said firechamber connected to said water-front and water-section, steam-pipes in said superheating-chamber, a steam-dome connected to said Water-section and superheatin g-pipcs and situated in said flue, and the equalizing-chamber 18, connected to said superheating-pipes and situated in the passage between said flue and fire-cl1amber, substantially as set forth.
3. In a steam-generator, the combination,
with the fire-box, the water-section, and the- Water-front 5, having a fire door connected to said water-section, of the equalizer 9, a Water-leg composed of tubes surrounding the inner walls of said fire-box and extending into said equalizer and water-front, and the feed-pipe connect-ed to said equalizer, substantially as set forth.
4. In a steam-generator, the combination, with the furnace having a fire-chamber, of the superheating-chamber 13, the floor or partition 11, dividing said chambers, the flue 12, connecting said chambers, the smoke-flue 14, leading from said chamber 13, a water-leg composed of tubes 8, surrounding said firechamber, the feedpipe, the equalizer 9, connected to said feed-pipe and to each of said' tubes 8, the water-front 5, connected to said water-leg, the Water-section supported upon said front and connected therewith, the tubes 7, arranged in layers in said chamber 13', the tubes 15, extending through the flue 12 and connecting the upper one of said layers with the water-section, and the superheater 1'8, situated in the passagebetween the fine 12 and fire-chamber, and connected to the lower one of said layers and the steam-main, as set forth.
5. In a steam-generator, the combination, with the furnace having a fire-chamber and a superheating-chamber, 18, and the watersection in said fire-chamber, of the partition 11, forming the crown of one and the floor of the other of said chambers, the flue 14, the flue 12, extending from the superheatingchamber directly into the upper part of the fire chamber, the superheating pipes arranged in layers in chamber 13, tubes 15, connecting the upper layer of said pipes with said water-section, and the superheater 1S, arranged in the passage between fine 12. and the fire-chamber, and connected to the lower one of said layers, as set forth.
