FASTENING FOR DOG-COLLARS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 394,506, dated December 11, 1888.

My invention has relation to dog-collars, and has for its obj ect the provision of a novel, simple, and easily-operated clasp or catch for adjustably securing the collar upon the ani- 15 mals neck.

My invention consists in the novel construction, combinations, and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and specilically claimed.

A designates atlat rectangular metallic casing, which forms the body of the clasp, and which is open at one end, C, to receive a tongue, B, the body A and tongue B being secured, respectively, to the ends of the dog- The casing A is provided with an open-ended slot, D, and said slot D has notches d d at intervals on its sides. The tongue B carries a vertical stud, E, the shank of which is diminished in width near the top,

4o as at e, so as to allow the stud when in one position to slide readily through the slot D, while the base of said stud is of such width that it will not pass through the narrower portion of the slot D, but will lit in the notches d d of the same when the stud is in another position. Upon the back of the tongue B is a spring, F, which tends to press said tongue j ment with the notches. slid along in either direction until the deagainst the side of the casing having the slot D, and thus project the stud E through the notches d d.

To operate the catch constructed as above described, it is only necessary to press upon the stud E until t-he narrow portion e of its shank is in line with the slot D and the wider part or base of said shank is out of engage- The tongue B is now sired point of adjustment has been reached, whereupon the pressure upon the stud E is released and the stud is allowed to rise and project its wider portion through notches d d, as before.

In the modified form shown in Figs. 3 and 4 the stud E is secured to a spring, F, upon the bottom of the casing A, and projects through holes in said casing. The openended slot D and the notches (l (Z are in this form of the device in the tongue B, instead of being' in the casing A. The operation of the modified device is substantially the same as that ot the one above described-that is, to adjust the catch the stud E is pressed down until the narrow part e of its shank is presented to the slot D in the tongue B, and the latter is slid into or out of the casing A to secure the desired adjustment, and the stud E is then allowed to rise until its base or wider part projects into the notches d d, as before described.

Having described my invention, I claim- In a catch or fastening, the combination of the frame A, having slot D, with notches d d, and atongue, B, having stud E, with narrowed shank e, and a spring, F, attached to the lower side ot' said tongue, substantially as shown and described.
