W. N. WHEATDBUFT.
Belt-Clasps.
N0.|52,204. Patented June 16,1874.
WITNESSES. I I INVENTOR m 4 GP: uh W Q V,
Attorneys.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE WVILLIAM N. IVHEATOROFT, OF IRVINGTON, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN BELT-CLASPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 152,204, dated Jllfle 1574; application filed May 5, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM N. WHEAT- CROFT, of Irvington, in the county of Essex and in the State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Belt- Clasps; and do hereby declare that the fol lowing is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
My invention relates to the class of beltclasps which are made in two parts, each part fastened to one end of the belt, and provided with a suitable device for hooking them together; and the nature of my invention consists in stamping or otherwise forming each half of the clasp with its part of the fastening device and loop all in one piece, and in such a manner that, when the two parts of the clasp are fastened together, the fastening device and the loops for attaching the belt are entirely hid by the front of the clasp, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which Figure l is a front view, and Fig. 2 an inside view, of my improved belt-clasp.
A Arepresent the two halves of a beltclasp, which may be stamped out and ornamented in any desired manner. Along the inner edge of each part A is formed a plate, B, with one or more longitudinal slots, at, ex-
tending nearly the entire length of the plate; and a slot, I), is cut out at the edge of the part A, from the end of the plate B inward for about one-half the length of said plate, in such a manner that the two parts of the clasp may be locked together, as shown. At the outer end of the slot 1), from the edge of each part A, extends a tongue or lip, d, which passes under the inner edge of the other part, like the plate B, when the parts are fastened together. Each part A, with the plate B and tongue or lip d, is stamped or otherwise formed out of one piece of sheet metal or other suitable material, and the plate B and tongue d are bent slightly out of the line of the part A. The plate B, with its slot or slots, forms the loop in which the end of the belt is fastened; and it will be seen that, when the clasp is fastened, the strain will bring the two parts A A close together, so as to completely hide the loops and fastening device.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is f f A belt-clasp consistingof the two parts A A, with plates B B, one or more slots, a a, cut-outs b b, and lips 11 (I, each part being stamped out of a single pieceof material, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 16th day of April, 1874.
V. N. \VHEATOROFT.
Vitnesses JAMES M. O. EATON, H. Gr. WILLIAMs.
