UNITED STATES PATENT GEFICE.
GEORGE ENGER, OF MILWAUKEE, WVISCONSIN.
POCKET-BOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No, 392,019, dated October 30, 1 888.
Application filed August 20, 1888. Serial No. 283,217. (No model.)
T0 at whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE ENGER, of Milwankee,in the count-y of Milwaukee, and in the State of \Visconsimhave invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pocket-Books; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to pocket-books; and it consists in certain peculiarities of construction and combination of parts to be hereinafter described with reference to the accompanying drawings, and subsequently claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a pocket-book constructed according to my invention and partly opened; Fig. 2, a similar view of the same entirely opened, and Fig. 3 a transverse section taken through the center of the device.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A A represent the two frame-sections of my pocketbook, these frame-sections being hinged together at I) bin the usual manner and provided with the ordinary locking-knobs,l3 B; but instead of said knobs any suitable fastening device may be employed. Each of the framesections is preferably tapered, or, in other w0rds,so constructed that the distance between its sides gradually decreases in a direction outward from the hingejoints b b.
The body portion ofmy pocket-book is composed of a back piece, 0, and side pieces, D D, the latter being triangular in shape and having their longest edges clamped to the framesections. In the finer grades of pocket-books the body portion is usually provided with a lining; but this lining may be omitted.
When the pocket-book is entirely or partially closed, the downward movement of the hinge-joints b b causes the slack in the side pieces, D D, to lie over in wide folds E E, the folds thus formed serving to retain the contents of said pocket-book in place. At any time the pocket-book is only partially open the folds E E remain, and there is noliability of the contents dropping out, no matter in which way said pocket-book may be held.
From the peculiar shape of my pocketbook, all its contents are displayed when said pocketbook is only partially opened, and thus it will be seen that the folds E E are normally in position to serve the purpose described.
My pocket-book being entirely opened, as shown by Fig. 2, its greatest depth will be in the center and there will be a gradual slope from this center toward the outer ends of the fr'amesections, thereby facilitating the removal of the contents.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A pocket-book comprising the hinge-joined frame-sections A A, the back piece, 0, and the triangular side pieces, D D, having their longest edges secured to the frame-sections, whereby a downward movement of the hinge-joints b b of said sections will cause the slack in said side pieces to lie over in wide folds, the folds thus formed serving to retain the contents of the pocket-book in plaee, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand, at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, in the presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE ENGER.
